I have found this forum to be...... the most informative and valuable tool I have for my little girl and me!:) I have never had a dog this small and am at such a loss as to what to do. I rec'd her yesterday and have been reading this ever since with her on my lap. I have another little angel too and she is a terrier/chi mix and weighs 13lbs and is huge next to my Honey!!! Honey is 5 mo.old and weighs 2 lbs. I got her as a gift from my sons. She has registration papers and all. I am wondering if that is a good weight for her??? She is such a loving little girl , too much so that I cant put her down, I am a disabled 65 yr old on SS and I must teach her to like her crate but am at a loss as to how. I will take any and all thoughts, ideas and suggestions on what to do. If I posted this in the wrong place I am sorry .:) |
Welcome. The only thing I can think of for getting your little one to like her crate is to put treats in it. That way she will associate her crate with treats. It becomes a good place for her. Their are others who may have better suggestions. Hope this helps |
Congratulations on your new baby!!! Since this is your first little bitty dog, I would suggest a book, "Yorkies For Dummies"....this is a great manual for Yorkie owners, and has a ton of tips and techniques and information about everything you will probably encounter with your new baby.....it is a must have for any Yorkie owner! You can sit by the fireplace, with your new baby in your lap, and read all about your new baby!!! |
Thank you so much!!!!! |
If she resists being crated at night, what worked for me was to put mine in it (I have 2 but got them at different times so I had to do this twice but it worked both times) and put the crate on the nightstand by my bed, so they could see me. I'd stick my finger in between the bars and pet their little faces. I left it there for about 3 nights, then moved it to the floor right beside my bed. Each night I'd inch it towards the spot where I wanted it to stay and they did fine. Never cried or anything. Now when I say "bedtime" they run and jump in their crates. And if I have to work late (I work at home) they fuss at me at 11 pm sharp because they know it's bedtime and want me to take them into the bedroom so they can crawl into their beds. As I said, I've done this twice and it worked both times so I hope it'll work for you too. And congrats on your new baby! |
Hi and welcome to YT :) - so glad you found us! Your little one may not get too much bigger...she may yet have a little growth spurt, but it sounds like she will remain on the smaller side. I didn't use the crate for any of my babies bc they all just hated it, and I don't believe in forcing animals into small spaces if they don't like it. Instead, I used the Iris Pen from Walmart, and it worked great! |
Wylies mom thank you ! I havent been "making" her stay in the crate,I just couldnt. She is so tiny and her sweet little bark was like she was crying ! LOL I did buy the book that was suggested Yorkies for Dummies and am waiting for it to arrive. I am just so clueless as I have never had a furbaby this little , even my Persian was bigger than she is as a baby! LOL |
Welcome! I love this site. I have learned so much from the members here. I hope you love it as much as I do! Congrats on your furbaby! |
If you decide not to crate her you might want to do what I did for Annie she weighted 3 pounds at 4 months old (currently 3.5pounds/1.25 year old). The steps to buy were too expensive so I went to Home Depot and got a 1"X10" piece of wood about 6 feet long. Cut off about a foot to make a center brace and made her a ramp to get up on the bed. Also bought a piece of runner carpet I tacked onto it. Took her about an hour to figure it out. She loves it and runs up and down like a champ! Only cost me about $18 in materials! Just and additional thought for you. |
