Meet Griffy! Aka my incredibly long introduction. Hi! I'm happy to have found this forum. I'm not new to being a dog owner, but I am a bit new to owning a yorkie. I'm sure anyone who owns a yorkie can understand the difference! Haha. I've owned a pekingese poodle mix (pekepoo) for 7 and a half years now. I got him (Chewbacca aka Chewie) when he was 5 months old, and he turns 8 in April. Chewie was kind of the absolutely perfect new dog owner dog. He learned quickly, but also had quite a bit of behavior problems that had to be corrected. I learned a ton from him! Which brings me to my owning a yorkie. I grew up with a yorkie. From when I was 2 years old, until I was 17. I'd always wanted to get one of my own as an independent dog owner, but I chose Chewie first (or Chewie kind of chose me). I thought he would be a better fit for my lifestyle at the time. I was definitely right. About a year ago, I decided that it was the right time to start looking for a second dog. I knew right away that I wanted a yorkie. I was working in a grooming shop, and everyone there had dubbed me "the yorkie lady" because of my affinity to that breed. They also knew I was on the lookout for anyone who wanted to find a new home for any yorkie that came in. After a few leads that didn't work out, a co-worker of mine was checking out a client and asked her if she wanted to set up her next grooming appointment. Turns out the client had been looking for a new home for her dog, but with no luck. My co-worker immediately gave her my number, and the next day I met her back at my grooming shop (we thought it was best to give him over at a place he was familiar at) and I brought him home that day! Sorry for the extremely long explanation on how I got my little pup pup. I am just so incredibly grateful that everything worked out so amazingly well for me, his previous owner, and for my yorkie, Griffy. Griffy just turned 3 in November and he is the biggest little character. Despite his size, being younger, and being new, he immediately became the alpha between my two dogs. Which luckily works well, since Chewie is incredibly dismissive and easy going. Anyway, enough rambling. I hope this wasn't so long that everyone just dismissed it! I look forward to meeting you all and learning new things. I am sure I will have questions, Griffy unfortunately has some behavioral issues, I hope you all will help me out with those. And I hope that I'll be able to help with any questions any of you have! Also, I was a bather at my previous shop. I am now a grooming apprentice at another shop, so if anyone has questions regarding those types of things, I would be happy to help out! |
Hi and welcome to YT. It sounds like Griffy has really lucked out with his new home. Congratulations on the apprenticeship we Yorkie owners know that a great groomer is a blessing. I look forward to seeing pictures of Griffy and his buddy Chewie. |

Speaking of pictures. How do I attach them? I'm sorry, I am a bit lost... |
Congrats on your new fur baby!! I am new to the site too, and I am so excited to learn too! This site seems to have a wealth of knowledge for people new to owning Yorkies. Welcome!! |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! It sounds like you and Griffy were just meant to be, bc of the way it all came together - how perfect. Can't wait to see a piccie! |
Welcome to you and Griffy. |
Welcome to YT |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and welcome Griffy and Chewie. Please post pictures of both, honestly I am so curious to see Chewie - his breed mix has me intrigued. I swear Poodles are so dang smart, love them and of course love Yorkies. |

1 Attachment(s) Sorry for the long delay between this post and posting pictures. Hopefully, I'm doing this correctly... This is the most resent picture of Griffy. I'm not playing with different cuts on him, this isn't my favorite, but he's adorable no matter what. Also, he has a scab on the tip of his right ear, it's not dirty. Though, he is in need of a bath soon, since I hate his hair being greasy. |
1 Attachment(s) Sorry for the double post, but here is a picture of Griffy withmy pekepoo, Chewie (aka Chewbacca). You'd think Griffy was older from this picture, but Griffy is 3 and Chewie is almost 8. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I hope Griffy is working out well for you. I am new to YT as well and new to owning a Yorkie. I knew a couple and they were splitting up and well, the wife didn't want the dog (I understand that perhaps she didn't like the dog?) and the husband couldn't take the dog. She gave me the dog. He is 9 years old and oh my gosh do I love him! I have had him almost 2 months and he fit right into my life immediately. We took the truck out to fill it up with gas and run a few errands and I just put a small dog bed on the bench seat next to me and he was more than happy to ride along all day with me. Last night I was picking my daughter up from track practice and she informed me there was a parent meeting after practice. I had Teek with me and so he went to the meeting. An hour and 20 minutes he sat on my lap in the school cafeteria and not a sound or anything out of him during the entire thing. I even asked him over the weekend "Where have you been all my life?" His response was to snuggle closer to me and put his head on my shoulder to give me a hug. I think he feels the same way. I hope you enjoy your Yorkie as much as I am enjoying mine. I would love to hear how yours is adjusting and although I am new to Yorkies, I have trained many dogs and would be happy to see if I have any possible ideas on training/behavior issues. I was starting an online class to be a dog trainer when I worked in a pet shop several years ago, but then it closed down, so I never finished. I have also taken 2 dogs through 3 levels of training and 2 dogs through the first level of training. I also help my neighbor train her doberman because she has trouble with it and he responds well to me. |

It aalways makes me said when a dog needs to be rehomed. I can understand the husband's predicament, but I can never understand not liking a dog. With working in grooming shops, I've encountered a surprising amount that really dislike their dogs. Though, I'm a dog lover, I fall in love with every single dog that comes into my shop. I'm just happy that this pup found a good home with you. He sounds like he is already amazingly well trained. I do have a few issues with Griffy. He barks when he is excited or sometimes for no reason. When I first got Chewie, he would do the same, but I was able to train him very easily not to. I'm having a hard time with Griffy. Neither of them bark when I'm at work. I put them in a kennel and they both are comfortable with it. Chewie goes in as soon as I put my shoes on, Griffy goes in when I tell him it's time to go to bed. He still fights it sometimes but he's gotten soooo much better with it. The problem is when I get home. Griffy is a bit bipolar with Chewie. Griffy likes to growl at Chewie. Usually I think that it is over Griffy trying to assure his possession of me. Typically I ignore Griffy, start petting Chewie, and over time Griffy gives in and starts licking Chewies eyes and ears. Or starts pawing Chewie until he plays with him. |

I'm still new here, so I'm not sure how things work. I looked at your profile and didn't see any Dutchess pictures. Would you mind posting one? Or pointing me in the right direction to see pictures of her? I'm very curious! |
Chewie and Griffy are both adorable! All the best with the new little guy. |
Welcome to YT! Both of your babies are ridiculously handsome! |
Your Griffy is adorable; the two of you were meant to be...congratulations on the new addition to your already super-cute family! |
I have "theories" on why the wife didn't like my dog, but I only know the couple socially a little, not very well. Theory 1 is she doesn't like dogs at all. Any dogs. Theory 2 is the dog is 9 years old, they had been married less than that. What if he got the dog with an ex? I would have gotten the dog to adore me if I was in that situation, however, back to number 1. I don't think she likes dogs much. I am a dog lover, so it is just crazy for me. My husband had a dog that he got in high school. Then he got married and then divorced and he still had the dog when I was dating him and so I just loved on the dog even if him and his wife had it together for a while, but they didn't get the dog together, although it wouldn't have mattered, I would have still got the dog to love me. She died about a year before we got married and I was the one taking care of her the last 2 weeks of her life when she could barely lift her head up at all. I was there when we took her to the vet because she could no longer stand at all and it was time to let her go. I was the one stroking her head and talking to her and whispering in her ear what a good dog she was and how much we loved her. I don't know why the wife didn't like Teek. I can see a few things that he did that maybe she didn't know how to control. He is a trash digger. My solution.... don't throw away food items in trash he can get to. We already had a covered kitchen trash because my husband's dog is half horse and could just eat out of the trash like it is a food bowl. LOL I think he may have had issues with food with their small children. I have teenagers and so we just tell him no and down and we don't let him take food out of our hands or off our plates while we are eating, but I can see where that has happened in the past, but we are working on that behavior and he has improved a lot since I got him. If she didn't know how to deal with it then I can see there could have been an issue. These are just my theories on possible problems though from behavior I see him have in my house. Is he perfect? NO. Is he a great dog? Absolutely! His personality is golden! He loves everyone. He is so well behaved when we travel and go places. The trash thing is avoidable. The food thing we are training him. He does not dare take food from me, but I am alpha and have been from the moment I brought him home. I don't let him take it from my teens, but they are capable of stopping him themselves anyway and will tell him no. Only other bad habit I know he has is you can't leave underwear anywhere near him, so we pick them up and put them in the laundry room and problem solved. 2 are training issues with the people in the house and 1 is a training issue with the dog. Overall though, I got an amazing dog who is by far my best friend and is loved and adored. I can see the lady I got him from not wanting to deal with these issues though and stuff from what I know of her (as I said, I don't know her well). I also met a girl that took care of him when they went away for a week and she didn't even want him to come near her, but I don't think she knew how to deal with a dog, she was young and I think a dog like Teek needed an experienced dog owner to be able to understand him and work with him. I do believe I bring out the best in this little guy as many other dog lovers and experienced dog owners would. However, I can see where someone who doesn't know anything about dogs would have problems. Does that make sense to you? |
