Newbie family thinking of getting a yorkie puppy!! I'm new here...Our family is thinking about getting a yorkie...so I thought this would be a good group to join to learn more!! We live in western Pennsylvania...near Pittsburgh... Can you recommend any breeders in this area? |
Hi and WELCOME :)! I don't personally know breeders in that area, but you might try starting with The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and check out the breeders in your area there. Best of luck on your search! Btw, some very good breeders are willing to fly their pups to you, using a courier who actually carries the pup in the cabin w/ them (not cargo). |
Awesome, so glad your doing your homework first! I'm near Buffalo, NY and honestly have not heard of a great breeder in the area...becareful with the brokers in your area and of course no puppymills! |
I would recommend reading two books to get you started on this Yorkie Adventure....and it is an adventure because Yorkies are not like any breed you have had before! I strongly believe an excellent owner is a knowledgable owner....Yorkies may not be the best breed for you, your family, or your lifestyle! "Yorkies For Dummies" is a great book/manual to help you decide if this is a breed for you! Terriers are stubborn, headstrong, and determined to run the household! You just need to be aware of what you are getting into! You MUST be persistant and consistant with training rituals, and your patience will be tested! "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book I highly recommend. Both of these books will give you a clear picture of what you are getting into with your baby, what you can expect from your baby, how to get the most from your relationship with this precious baby.......both of these books are available on Amazon.com. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. A great place to come to find out so much about the Yorkie Breed. When you sign in - the Second Forum - highlighted in Blue - is our library = contains many many informative articles; some topics which might interest you is *How to find a Responsible Breeder*, Yorkie Health Concerns, Evaluating a Puppy. New owners puppy care guide. We even have an article about evaluating pet insurance. Although we don't have one on the pros n cons of having pet insurance. But the financial burden of owning a dog needs consideration as well. Yorkies have more than a few health concerns, many of which are very expensive to treat. In terms of breeders; www.ytca.org is a good place to start. You can also go to www.akc.org and find out when dog shows are coming to an area near to you and plan to attend a dog show to meet some of the breeders in person. |
