Doggie Day Care & Lepto Shot I was thinking about occasionally taking Louie to Doggie Daycare. Do you think this would be a good idea or not? On there enrollment form I saw where they require the Lepto Shot (dhlpp). He has not received the Lepto Shot in his series of puppy shots. Heard this shot is dangerous for Yorkies, has anyone given this shot to their Yorkie? |
Sophie Kate is 6 years old and has had a Lepto Vac since she was a puppy with no problem. |
I would talk with your vet about this. Lepto does have a lot of adverse reactions, imo, you only give it if your area has a high incidence of Lepto. Usually Lepto is contacted from near waterside locations. So if you are not hiking or swimming your pup, I am not sure why you would need it. |
My vet said the chance of a reaction was just as low as the chance of acquiring Lepto and he gave the odds of 1:10,000,000. Then, he promptly vaccinated my dog who had no adverse reactions. BUT, I think it is important for you to discuss with your vet as my vet is very pro-vaccination and stated that the reason the chance of contracting Lepto is so low is because we are all vaccinating against it - which makes sense. The advice given to you should be location and dog specific just as mine was! Good luck. |
lepto shot My yorkie had a horrible reaction to lepto shot. I had to rush her to the 24 hour vet. That was 7 years ago. My Bichon did not have a problem. I am surprised as that being a requirement. Did they require Kennel Cough? |
I don't give the Lepto shot. You can get DHPP without lepto and that's prob what the daycare wants unless the daycare is outdoors and there are wildlife or stagnant water sources on the premises where one might find lepto. Know that the lepto vaccine does not cover all strains of lepto and needs to be done every 8-12 months to be effective. Nice money maker for vets. |

I don't, mainly because Jackson had a horrible reaction to it, so I can not give it to him. But in the future, I likely won't for future dogs either. The daycare likely just needs to see DHPP. |
Rin and Tyson are 6 and 5 years old, respectively. We have used the same vet for their entire lives. They always received a lepto vaccination. I recently changed vets....the new vet told us she never gives lepto vaccine to dogs under 5lbs, and it's completely unnecessary in our area. |
Waffles has had the Lepto vaccine with no adverse reaction. Here in Oregon the cases of Lepto have been on the rise so we plan on continuing to vaccinate Waffles for it. I wasn't really all that worried about it until my sister-in-law's dog recently died from Lepto - she lives in Washington State in the Seattle suburbs. Also, humans can get Lepto so I don't think it's something to take lightly. |
