Peeing in house
 

I have 3 yorkies...11 yr, 2 yr and 10 mos. My 2 yr was and now isn't house broken (pees in house when I'm not looking..or when he is left alone for a short while). My 11 yr and 10 mos are both house broken and do not pee inside. All pets are fixed. 11 yr is female, 2 yr is male, 10 mos is female. All dogs are 'crate trained'.

Background. Purchased my 2 yr old as a puppy. He was house broken for about 3 weeks right at about a year old. Then we purchased our last one (now she is 10 mos). Shortly after adopting the puppy (the now 10 mos old), our 2 year old started peeing inside all the time. It's driving me nuts. It's like he is peeing inside to mark his territory. Like I said the 2 year old is crate trained (he will not pee in his crate) but if I don't watch him ALL the time...he will leave a mess.

Ex: took him outside...he peed 2x and let him back in the house. Then I took a shower. After the shower... I had a nice present for me at the bathroom door...not 20 mins after I left him out. This is typical. If I'm in the house...but not visible..I can surely expect an accident from him.

I've tried everything.... take him outside and reward with treats. Rub his face at the mess and spank on but with newspaper and place him outside. I'm at my wits end.

Somebody PLEASE help! My wife and I are going nuts.

have you had the urine tested for an infections or kidney issues? My yorkie is older and starting doing this several years ago. Turned out she has kidney issues. There is usually a reason for this I would talk to your vet. The newspaper spanking or yelling is never ever a good idea to do.

Don't ever rub his face in urine or hit him -- if you're doing that, you're making it worse, by far -- bc this just confuses him and will make him pee in *more* places where you cannot see bc he is now growing afraid of peeing in general...so he'll feel the need to do it far away from you, in hiding.

The only thing I can think of for you right now is the tethering method, and you'll probably have to do this for quite a while. Even then, some male dogs have a problem w/ marking their whole lives, and it's instinctual, so it's very tough for them to control.

Because you say that your 2 yo was housebroken and now isn't, in your opinion, I would recommend taking him to the vet to rule out any health issues. Sometimes, animals pee to alert that they are not well because the sickness will "announce" itself to other animals via scent.


If he's peeing a LOT after you've taken him out, it's unlikely to be marking. My Teddy marks and it's drips. He can mark a lot if he's not been out in awhile but never a lot after he's just been out.


I think a vet visit is in order first and, in the mean time, do not allow him free reign of the home. Teddy is now tethered to me or within constant supervision until his belly band arrives. A belly band is another solution but please don't use this INSTEAD of a vet visit first.

My older male used to be sneaky with marking. Also when I wasn't looking but in more "hidden" places rather than in plain sight. He would mark in the bedroom a couple drips on the bed skirt or on the curtains in the living room. If the medical issue is ruled out you may have to get belly bands. That helped with mine bc once he realized he wasn't able to actually mark his territory, he stopped needing the belly bands. It's years later now and I can honestly say he only marks rarely now. Maybe once or twice a year. So it really helped my situation. He was my only dog at the time and I also got rid of the peep pads and he was going only outside. That may have helped too.

I have 2 male yorkies. One is 8 yrs old and the other is 11 months. The 8 yr old only has an accident if he is ill. The 11 month old yorkie has the same behavior as your 2 yr old. He is find for a few weeks then seems to mark when left alone. I share your frustrations. I have made mistakes dealing with this in the past.

Based on what you have written, it seems this behavior started with the new female. It would suggest your 2 yr old male is marking his territory for the new puppy. You should check sites on line to deal with this behavior. I have gone to putting my dog in a confined space when I cannot watch him. I also have leashed and tied him to me around the house. This appears to be working and reducing accidents.

Wiley's mom-had a question for you-do you know of what type of insert would be good for my 5lb yorkie? I was going to have some diapers made for her but wasn't sure what I should use to catch the urine? any ideas?
