New Owner: Help! Hi! I am a first time yorkie owner and need help!!! My little Miah is 8 weeks and I just picked her up. It is so cold outside that I am afraid to start potty training plus she hasn't had her 12 week shots yet. I don't really want her to get use to a pee pad because I want her to go outside!! I have a play pen for her with a bed area, pee pad area, and food area. However, some have told me I need to have her in a crate?? Should I wake in the night with her??? How do I potty train a 8wk pup in -12 degree weather? Is it acceptable to train to pee pad on play pen them transition to outdoor training when she gets a little older and it gets warmer?? Help! Thanks! :) |
I would go for the puppy pads at least till it's warmer. * weeks is kind of young to take pup from Mama. Either way a play pen and pads and a sleeping area will be great. I would set it up next to your bed so she knows you are there. Crate training is great but also can wait Right now at her age she pretty much needs love and nutrition. You may find she might be a bit scared to be alone. Good luck with the new furbaby. :aimeeyork |
8 weeks is really young for a Yorkie so I think it would be okay for your to wait another month before introducing outside potty training. I didn't get my Teddy until he was 12 weeks old and the breeder had the adults pee pad trained and the puppies were using pads or newspaper. This didn't affect his training. I had him trained in 2 weeks. |
Like the others said, I'd wait a bit bc technically at 8wks, it would be better if the pup was still w/ its Momma. So, don't worry about it yet. I didn't do crates bc my dogs absolutely hate them. Instead, I used the 4-panel Iris Pen from Walmart. |
Thank you all so much for your replies. You all were very helpful and I feel so much more confident now! Have a wonderful day. :) |

8 weeks is to young to be out in this frigid weather, transitioning from pee pads to out doors after she has all her vaccines, also. weather may be a bit milder at that time . |
Thank you!! |
