Do you walk your yorkie often in winter? Chloe is potty trained on pads so she doesn't need to go out for potty but I wonder how often you guys take your dogs for walks when it's really cold? It started snowing yesterday in NY and now I'm scared to walk her in case salt hits her paws from the floor or if the floor is too cold now. I mainly just carry her in a carrier or in my hands now. Do you guys use boots or socks? |
Mine barely go out. |

I have walked mine almost daily for 10 years. When it gets below 27 degrees, I think it is too cold and I don't even want to walk. They are large 18 pounders with a lot of energy and dont get cold as easily. This year we are not walking so much as we all three have arthritis now. But the vet just told me walking is the best thing for arthritis, so continue the daily walks. It is 10 degrees out right now...I don't think so. Lol |
I don't because of the snow or melting snow that seems to be here in the winter. Even with boots which she does not do well in her underneath gets wet. Lola can handle the cold very well, better than me, but getting wet is what chills her to the bone. BTW There is a very active group of small dog owners in NYC many of them are members of a pup scout troop which I belong to, (uniforms and everything) but I only get to NYC about 4 times a year so I can not attend as much as I would like. But they have lots of fun and they participate at all the fun pet walks and activities. There is also a big fundraiser fashion show on Long Island in June for Yorkie 911 a local rescue group, it's an awesome event and a few of us from here attend. |
Joel can walk forever as long as he has his booties on even when it's 5 degrees. He's a little sled dog and does not mind the cold, but he can also stay in the house for weeks at a time without caring. I try to take him every other day anyway just to explore and get some fresh air:p |

You know, that is so nice to know. I struggle with guilt because I don't let Teddy go out as often as he does in the spring/summer. This is our first winter together and I feel like I'm trying to encourage him to be a hermit. But, I have tried taking him out to the park, backyard, walking etc. and it seems like he WANTS to enjoy it but is very eager to come back in... Argh - it's like raising kids all over again - guilt vs what is good for them vs what is good for you vs what you think you know vs what is true... Melt down over...lol! |

I used to take the boys out every day as long as the temp reached about 25 - 30 degrees. We have been wimpier this winter. Teddy likes to wear boots if there is snow. Max doesn't mind cold paws. Avoiding salt is a challenge. Even with protective footwear, my biggest concern is that the doggies will lick the salt. |
I haven't been taking my Reese out much, just a little brisk walk around the block. That's about all I can handle. Since we're doing potty training he's crated during the day except when I come home from lunch and in the evening. I take him to puppy play time at Petco every Saturday afternoon for an hour and last night we went to another puppy play time at another location. He's going to day care tomorrow so he can romp around with other dogs for 5 hours. He's my only dog so I feel guilty! |
We have averaged about 5 minutes out 3x per day. Heck with the Dog Mama is cold! He is outdoor trained only so there is no help for it but to go outside. Instead with do stuff inside - I have obstacle course in living room - replete with a ramp that works as an A frame, then a balance beam etc. When not in use the pieces sit up on my living couch! The blackies are in seventh heaven and would sleep out in the backyard if I let them. Silly dogs. But twas the temps they were bred for. |
