Need help with training my fiance not my yorkie :) My story in a nut shell... My girlfriend and I have a 1 year old yorkie/poodle mix. I am pack leader and realistically our dog Gia is #2 and sadly Cheryl my baby is #3 :) I was diligent in training as we got her at 9 weeks so she does the basic sit and the like and we adore her... but the train went off the tracks as it relates to potty time. I think I got to lax to soon so now IF we have her gated off in the kitchen/garage entrance she will go potty on the puppy pad by the door. If she is not gated off and has free roam of the house and has the urge she goes in her favorite room corner and NOT to the puppy pad ???? |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! It can be SO hard to potty train, so I feel your pain. The only thing I can suggest is you put a potty pad in her fave corner, and then keep moving if further and further away from that area towards an area which is more acceptable. Either that, or keep her tethered to you so you can watch for signs that she has to go. |
I've had (4 yr old) Piper for 8 months now and though she's come a long way, we still have "outside" issues once-in-awhile. These little sweeties are willfull, stubborn and the loves of our lives, right!?! Trust "Wylie's Mom" she knows her stuff!!! "I am as confounded by dogs as I am indebted to them." -- Roger Caras |
Try giving Gia roaming freedom in smaller increments, instead of going from one small area to the whole house. Depending on the size of the dog and the size of the house, the dog may not want to travel too far to get to the pad. As Ann suggested, maybe move the pad or put another one in the corner where she seems to be going. Often these little ones won't want to leave an area to travel far and potentially miss something exciting. Or, even at 1 year of age, a small dog may not have developed as much control over their body and the ability to anticipate the need to go and time to make the trip. My boys developed at very different rates: Max had amazing control from the start, but Teddy took longer to get beyond a sense of urgency to piddle. As for difficulty training humans vs the dogs -- I can relate. I never did succeed in training my dad to give the 'stay' command at the door.:) |
