Possible Hawk Deterrent Just read an article about using several black crow decoys to discourage hawks from bird feeders (which I translated to mean my Yorkie's yard). The article said the hawks are afraid of being attached by the crows. Also said you have to move the decoys around from time to time so the hawks don't figure out they are decoys. I'm always looking for hawk deterrents since our devastating hawk attack of several years ago, so thought I would pass this along. Haven't tried it yet but I have noticed that our cold days have gotten the attention of a hawk or two watching my finch feeders. So - I'll be shopping for black crow decoys - the larger the better I suppose. I did not think anything much scared a hawk except a crazy lady with a rake who is screaming and yelling and racing around the yard making the neighbors wondering if they should call the padded wagon people:D |
I have "black crows" and "owl" decoys all over my back yard and they do work! I have owls that move their heads,,,,,and yes, you have to spend the time to move the decoys all around the yard.....those nasty hawks are smart, and they will notice if the decoys never move! I even have big black crows I got from a Halloween store....big birds with wings out stretched....I hung them from a string so they would "fly" when the wind blows.....looks fake to me, but I think the hawks are buying it! |
Thanks for the response. Yea, the article said you had to move them around - guess those darn Hawks are smarter than I thought - real survivors! I'm now I'm the search for decoys:D |
I got my owls from Ace Hardware, and I got two that move their heads on line....cant remember where on line.....google it! My crows (ravens) came from a Halloween store and I ordered a couple on line..... |
Interesting! I'm going shopping. |
I hang old cd's from fishing line over my chicken coops, too. The movement and sparkling seem to help (we have actually had issues with not just hawks, but a juvenile eagle, too). I do have an owl decoy. I love the idea of some crows in the yard! Just for grins and giggles, and because my neighbors already think I'm nuts. *grin* I don't guess the fake flamingos are any sort of deterrent, huh? I love them though. lol |
Thank you so much for the suggestion. We live in the desert and I've heard of the hawks even picking up small dogs on leads with the owner right there. I also am off to shop for crows. |
Thanks for sharing and it sounds like it is going to work! |

Perhaps you"ll be more effective if you wore one of these, but then your neighbors would call the padded wagon for sure.:D Black Wide Spread Costume Feather Angel Wings Halo Mask Set Raven Crow Masqurade | eBay ...And the dogs can help too! :) Petco Raven Crow Costume Wings Beak Cap O s Cat XS Dog Black Bird Feather 2 PC | eBay |
