Does he need a companion? Happy new year furfriends and furparents! I went home to my Province to spend the holidays with my family, so my baby boogie stayed at my boyfriend's house. My boyfriend has 2 shih tzus so my baby had a playmate for 2 weeks. We noticed that he ate extremely a lot and gained weight when he was at my boyfriend's house. Seems like he loves having playmates. :) Now he is back again at my house and he seems super sad. He doesn't do his usual routines of waking me in the morning by licking my face. And also, he doesn't want to eat!:( Seems like he became distant towards me as well :( What can I do about this. Can we work it out or do I need to get a brother/sister for him? Also, please share what type of breed have you mixed with your yorkie and how was the experience? Thanks a lot guys! |
I would never recomend getting a pet for your pet. If *you* want another, then OK, but don't get one for him. That being said, he may be missing his new friends, is there a way they can still visit and have play dates? That may be the best way to keep him happy without the work and expense of another pet. As far as him acting distant towards you, you may need to entice him with a favorite game or treat. Sounds like he had a grand time while on his 'vacation,' now it's time to get back into his normal routine. Maybe try something new and interesting - clicker train some fun tricks - dogs love to learn and they tend to bond closely with those who spend time training them. |
I do think dogs do really well w/ another dog, even if they're not besties. Do you want another dog? |

Brody had a 95 lb brother a year old when he went to live with his first family as a puppy. They were not companions in a true sense due to the size and age differences. He came home with me at 14 months old. A couple months later, we puppy sat our friend's ex,-show Shih Tzu puppy. After she went home, Brody would just lie on the floor where her kennel sat, looking sad and forlorn. I knew he needed a companion like him. We got Mia when both Brody and Mia were 17 months old, and they have been best friends since the moment they met. I cannot say that is how it would be for you should you choose to get a companion...just how it was for us, and how I decided it was best for him. |
I do agree with don't get another dog, unless you want another dog. If you think your dog needs more canine companionship arrange playdates, walking dates, do some group training with him, etc. I have a large breed with my Yorkie. |
I do want a schnauzer or a pomeranian as a puppy. But not now, but I am feeling pressured to buy due my dog's reaction to being separated with his furiends. |
He could be punishing you for leaving him.these little guys are smart. Just spoil him some. Play withhim. But like everyone said dont get another dog just for him. You will have to give it love and if its to much you will get frustrated. I got a papilon and yorky. But would not recomend that breed . They get along and the yorky rules the roost till princess gets tired of it and puts him in his place.then mom has to break it up.but they look out for each other. But its a lot of work. |
I think he is really punishing me :( but he still kisses me which i love so much! |
I agree with, get another pup for YOU, not for your pup. If you're planning on one in the future stick with that plan. You little boy will get back to his lil self shortly, give him time. |
