Training How do you go about training a young yorkie ( almost 1) to stop when he pulls the lead from your hand.he won't stop or come to me. He has me so scared to take him out for walks. Potty training was easy for me but don't know how to get him to stop running and come to me. We have bonded but freedom causes him not to hear. |
I would take him to an obedience class if you're totally unfamiliar about how to train dogs - or - get a training book. It takes repetition and rewards. |
thank you Heading to book store for training book thank you . we do have a fenced back yard it I still keep him leashed even in the house. I'm so afraid he will slip thru the door when someone comes in. |
I agree, some good training classes would be helpful. Are you walking with a harness or are you attaching the leash to the collar? |
training Oh no I use a collar only for his tags harness on all the time |
That is awesome. Walking on a leash or loose leash walking takes practice and is not something that is inherent with a dog (ask me how I know? I had to get training for my dog LOL). I would also suggest you watch some of Victoria Stillwell videos on You Tube. She believes in positive training (high value treat for behaviors that we want). Does you dog know how to sit on command? If he does I would start with that when he is pulling, stop put him in a sit and make him wait awarding this behavior with a treat. Another thing my trainer said to try is when they pull turn and walk the other way, that will interrupt the dogs thought of where they were going. That never worked for me, whenever I turned Sophie Kate would sit down and so it turned into a whole battle of which way wins. Remember good leash habits take practice and us being consistent. |
