How cold before you skip the outside walk? Cold temps are relative to our respective areas I know, but how cold does it have to be before you skip the outdoor walk and settle for extra indoor play. For us, just returned from a brisk walk on the waterfront. It's 43 degrees and sunny but with a cold wind. Joni had her sweater on--- doubt we'd go out if it was much colder! How about you? |
When I had to leash walk my lil pack weather, temp. was not an option, they had their 30 minute walk no matter what the temp.or weather condition was, they were all house broken. Now I have a house with back yard, I open door and out we go. I only leash walk for extra exercise, Anything under 37 degrees it's 5 minute yard play, no leash walk. Today it is 28 degrees, I was lucky I was able to keep my boy outside for that 5 minutes. It takes me 15 minutes to get myself dressed and then him, all for 5 minutes lol. If your baby is house broken and not pee pad trained you don't really have a choice on outside temp. if pup in pee pad trained and walking is used as exercise I would say it's up to the person and their pup as to what they both can tolerate. |
I have a little 3 month old puppy, and he stands there shivering if it's less than 50 degrees ! |
It's 21F here today (with windchill it is 3F). ZoE just came in from playing in the yard. She had a hoodie sweatshirt on. We go out in most temps above zero, but lessen our time outside when it's bitterly cold. It strange how two days it can be the same temp, but if one day the sun is out and no wind, it feels so much nicer than when its overcast & windy. Basically, we dress for the weather, and when i start feeling cold, I know she has to be cold, and we'll head back inside. If we are out walking she gets cold, she'll paw at my leg and want up, so I pick her up and pop her inside my coat, while I walk back to my car. |
1 Attachment(s) We are outside again! Its getting colder now the sun is going down..,and the crazy neighbour is already setting of loud boom boom fireworks which ZoE doesnt like. |
ZoE is so cute bundled up. grrr fireworks When Max was a pup, my minimum temp for going out was 30 degrees. I'm growing wimpier in my old age, so now my minimum for walks is closer to 40 or 50. ;):p:D Max would go out in sub zero temps. Thankfully Teddy takes after me and gets cold fast. |
It was 20 degrees here and Bentley went out. He had a sweater on. We are trying to housebreak him. Sucks in this cold weather. He is only 1 lb so he can get under a bunch of places in the backyard so we put him on a really long leash at the backdoor. |

ZoE just turned four a couple of weeks ago. I can read her mannerisms well by now, so know when she's starting to get uncomfortable and wants to go inside. It was 18F just now (-5F with windchill) so she just wanted a one loop run of the yard, a sniff of a few trees and then she was ready to go back inside. |
He is 15 wks. It's hard to grab him and take him outside when u see him start to gocuz it is do cold out! Ugh |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...ctureid=135514Dex is handling -15 to -20c for very quick walks. He WANTS to be out and as long as we keep moving he's good. He lets me know when he needs me to carry him. I have him dressed in flannel pj's that cover all four legs with a parka over that and booties and he's 7 months now. We were doing well with building a gradual tolerance to the increasing cold, but we hit a nasty cold snap with -40 temps last week and that kept us housebound. Poor little guy is missing his walks and social time! |
Jackson doesn't care too much what the temp is but I do. I don't mind cold temps as much as I care about WIND chill... If it's a 25F day with sun and no wind, I don't mind bundling up at all and going for a walk. If it's like 35 degrees with a wind chill and no sun, I'm saying hellz no. |
Colder weather has shortened our near daily walks, it's pretty rare to get below 25*f around here so not a problem. Usually our weather problem is really that liquid sunshine, trying to time the walk in between the rain squalls this time of the year. |

Zoey is all rearing to go out but as soon as she's out she turns around and is back IN again! And I am too! |
