The purchase price in general is not the main issue in the end.
The care costs can be much more. The better breed the dog is will mean fewer possibilities of health issues (thT are costly) and you will have to pay for that breeding integrity.

Grooming, yearly dentals, spaying, potty training efforts, and daily brushing need to be considered. If you cut the coat shorter you will have more frequent grooming costs.

Not trying to discourage you, but want you to see the whole picture. It is very distressful to the YT folks here when they see a post where someone is wanting to regime their pup because it was too difficult to potty train, or they can not afford the surgery and illness the pup has, or the really tough one - they now have a new baby and it is not working out and the pup has to go. Or they have to move and can't take the dog with them.

This is a long term relationship as these pups will be with you and depend on you for possibly 15 or so years.

I applaud you for taking the time to research and ask these questions! Very smart of you!

I'm the original poster checking back in on this thread after a couple days of discussing the addition of a Yorkie to our family with my wife. I want to thank all who chimed in and volunteered valuable and/or humorous feedback based on your own experiences.

I grew up a dog lover, period. My parents however did not feel the same and never let me experience that bond in their home. As soon as I moved out to go to school I rushed out and picked up a German Sheppard mix from a local shelter. This poor animal was skin and bone and skittish of everything or anything that moved, including me at first. I named her Kya and we instantly became inseparable. I spent an endless amount of time building her confidence, training her, exercising her, socializing her etc. She literally became my side kick to the point that if I showed up at someone's house without her they'd ask me where she was. The good ol' college days.

I mention Kya because when my wife first met me she stated that Kya was so loving, sweet and affectionate towards me and anyone else she came in contact with that she was one of the reasons my wife fell in love with me. She knew that if I would spend that much time to develope such a sweet well trained dog that I would be a great dad. Hopefully she's right and that's still her opinion of me ;).

Kya has since past away (one of the hardest days of my life even though we saw it coming) and we have been without a canine companion in the family for almost 2 years. Now, here we are. I've done my research and decided that the Yorkshire Terrier is the breed for us.

Per my original post, my wife had serious sticker shock, especially since she herself has never purchased a purebred pup, but after reminding her of the first times she met me and the instant love she felt for me an Kya I have finally sold her on the idea that it is time again. We also found a great breeder who is willing to sell us one for $500 with all the great benefits (shots, deworm, socialized, warranty, dual registered etc) of a high dollar breeder.

A little homework, a little conversation here, and some persuasion and it seems as though we may be going to look at some Yorkie puppies today. Obviously if I bring my new buddy home I will be sure to post pictures here!

Wowee what news for the New Year! If you do get a puppy I would like you to seriously consider health insurance and health insurance that does cover genetic defects.


There are more than a few health problems of Yorkies that are very expensive to treat. This is not a slur on what-ever breeder you have found. But I believe it to be a wise decision - after self insuring more than a few dogs that have ended up with costly medical conditions of one nature or another.

I for one am very excited for you and your family. I am so sorry for the loss of your Kya and I have been there. Recently I might add. I do want to say that when I was determined to get my 1st Yorkie (almost 2 yrs. ago now) I had not done my homework and I purchased from a broker. My girl had hip surgery last year for LCPD. A little costly but today she is fine and healthy. I can tell you that I fell in love with her the 1st time I saw her and grow more in love with her every single day. Regardless of where she came from she was meant to be mine. All of that aside if I were looking for another pure breed of any kind I would search out a good breeder as I never want to witness what my little angel went through ever again. And I would never wish that for any pup and their owner. I'm sure you will pick out a beautiful healthy pup and I can't wait to see pictures of it. Get ready for your heart to melt...everyday!! I will be waiting to see you & your family's new bundle of joy! Just please promise to supervise your 2 babies when they are together. Oh and another thing before I forget..if your 4 yr. old knows how to open doors leading outside I would definitely put up baby gates so your new pup can't dash out the doors. Lots of us without small children have them and IMO they are a Yorkie must have.

Yes, yes, and yes to putting up baby gates or some kind of barrier to letting that baby get away from you!!!

So sorry for your loss of Kya...pretty name. I understand everything you went through...been there, too.

Having said that, YAY!!! I am very happy for you and your family, and I don't think you really needed help justifying the cost. Love trumps money in matters of the heart..LOL

You sound like a wonderful person...I think your wife must already be fully aware of that.

As was already said, get ready for your heart to melt...and for your wife to want a Yorkie for herself, too!

I had to really shrink the picture down just to get it to an acceptable size but here is my little boy "Blue". Named by our son; everyone loves home already! He was one of the more calm pups out of the litter I picked from but he's already coming out of his shell tonight and playing with us.

Rescue
 

We rescued a two year old yorkie and he has rescued us. If you don't want to potty train a dog, try a rescue dog. We couldn't have purchased a more loving dog.

Congrats! He's a handsome boy and you guys seem like a loving family that will spoil and treat this puppy right.

As others have mentioned as an err of caution just look into some pet insurance for those unexpected events. I am pleased with my insurance and happy to have invested in it.

Congrats! Blue is just adorable. Lots of fun is ahead for your family. Also, I agree about the insurance. Zoey just turned five on thr 30th and every year the cost of the insurance has paid for itself. Bee stings, pancreatitis attacks really adds up in vet bills. Insurance is a life saver. It seems expensive at first but pays off in the long term if you should have the need.
