Car rides
 
My 3year old Yorkie will not settle down riding in the car. As a puppy, she rode really well. I would like her to ride in an elevated booster so she can see out. I hate to put her in a crate while driving. Any ideas?

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Is she excited or nervous when she rides in the car? I have to admit, my boys are a little animated in the car and have devised a naughty barking game. They compete to see who can spot a motorcycle, school bus, or UPS truck first and then bark like crazy at it.

They are tethered in their elevated seat and cannot move, but I wish they would settle down and just enjoy the ride more quietly. :D

Yes put her in an elevated booster seat so she can see out of the window.

You can also try things like a ThunderShirt and even benadryl if she is really anxious. I have 3 and Bogey is the only one that doesn't do well in the car. I just asked the vet today for a RX for him because we have been taking him for weekend trips out our friends. He was so anxious on the way home Sunday I thought he was going to have a heart attack! I had him at the vet today and she gave himhttp://ww.petmd.com/pet-medication/acepromazine AcepromazinewI haven't tried it yet but think I might tomorrow when we head out for NYE. She told me to try a half dose and increase from there to a full pill.

they have the dap spray dog appeasing pheoromone that calms them down sometimes dogs can only smell it

Yes, definately invest in an elevated booster carseat. Here is ZoE in hers. Look at how high up she is! She loves being able to sit and look out the window as we drive around town, and her seat is plenty big enough that she has room to lay down on long trips.

That sounds just like mine. I wish they would a least learn to bark in unison. First one then the other. They also bark at runners and when we make certain turns onto roads that they know, like the dog park, home, and the vets office.

On long trips they eventually settle down and go to sleep but when we stop it starts over. When we first got them, they got car sick but once we got an elevated car seat they have been fine. Here in NJ there is a law that dogs have got to be tethered in a car.

Following up on our NYE trip. I gave Bogey 1/2 pill of Acepromazine about an hour before leaving and hoped for the best since my husband had left the day before. If it didn't worked I'd be driving alone with a crazed Bogey :eek:

He did great! I was able to clip him into his car harness and he seemed to enjoy looking out the window. No panting, shaking or terrorized eye bulging. After trying every other treatment I think I've found a solution for him.
