7 month old jumper Hello all I'm sorry if I'm not posting this in the right place. Computer savvy I am not. My little yorkie boy is quite the jumper and we found out the other day he can jump up on our bed which is quite tall! Has anyone found foam ramps or scalloped steps that are reasonably priced, and reach a taller bed? I would prefer a ramp or scalloped step because we also have a 10 year old dachshund. And both sleep with us. A friend mentioned a yorkie who actually shattered a leg from jumping so now I'm scared if he will jump up he will eventually jump down. He has no fear :( any suggestions? Thanks in advance any suggestions are appreciated. Price would normally not be a big concern but I am currently not working due to a son in cancer treatment. |
Maybe check sites like Craigslist. I know i have seen used steps/stairs on there relatively cheap. I use an upholstered foot stool in front of an upholstered vanity bench, at one side of my bed. I trained ZoE to get on and off my bed using them, by giving her little chicken pieces during training. She picked up on it really quickly, and always uses them to get on and off my bed. |
When we first got Bubba, I got steps at either CVS or Rite aid but my bed is tall and I had to get an add on kit to make a 4th step. I have since gotten steps from Animal Planet. These are made out of wood but not real sturdy but enough for my two. |
no fear Thank you both for responding. I will check Craig's list also, and I had no clue some steps could expand. First choice would be like a wedge style ramp due to the mini dachshund, to protect her also but it's the yorkie jumping that scares me at the moment. He has absolutely no fear |
Our bed was quite high when we got Gracie and I wanted her on the bed at night so we put the mattresses on the floor and the bed was still quite high because it has a thicker box spring than normal plus a memory foam topper. I bought a 3 step set of stairs on Amazon. I know they come in a 4 step set. You need to check the height measurement on the description to make sure it will go up high enough to meet your requirement. Some appear tall in a picture but are actually quite small. Many of the online pet supply stores have various types of steps. Sounds like a good investment for you since you have 2 dogs that need help going up and down. When they are young like your Yorkie they are fearless but it is not good for their joints to jump that kind of distance over a period of time. |

I chose it because not many pet steps were tall enough and most would've been hard for a tiny puppy to use. Lola was even able to use them without a problem the day after she was spayed. |
I actually did look at that same ramp on Amazon but I don't think it's tall enough for my mini dachshund, she has very short legs the yorkie could manage quite well. He's a big boy with long legs, and current weight is 10 pounds. Bed hight is fair amount taller and he could easily do it, but I think the dachshund might try to go down also and it would be a stretch for her. Maybe we could customize something to sit the steps on tho. |
I have a basic metal bed frame, box spring, and pillowtop mattress, the steps are about my palm's length lower than my bed. Lola did fine, even at 3lbs, the height difference is basically like another step. It's going to be hard finding higher steps. |
I found a few relatively close to bed height, hubby just going to have to get over the price because Snickers evidently did what I feared he would do,he jumped off the bed today :( Amazon here I come |

The top of ramp has a platform area. And it's perfect! My matters is 30" from the floor. Snickers is a little more hesitant to use it but I'm sure with practice he will do great, funny part is my mini dachshund who I thought would be the hesitant one went up and down several times! She's very food motivated :) her nails are very smooth so the "carpet cover" on the ramp is a little slick,and she slides down about 2/3 of the way... doesn't seem to bother her. My yorkie has his nails a little sharper and he didn't slide. Hope this will help someone else. |

He's definitely catching on he goes up more confident each time but hesitant going back down. I'm sure it won't take long tho... huge relief because he scared me half to death when I caught him jump down from bed. He's a big boy at over 10 pounds but his legs are so long and thin I'm so scared will hurt himself. Thisis a great option |

That's a good idea... I think you can buy a similar product in walmart or target also |
