Cruelty
 

I have a couple of friends who have moved to just a mile away from us. They both love small dogs and worship Crystal. I accompanied them today to a rescue center where there were 4 Yorkies. One a poor little chap, about 8 years old who had cataracts and a four year old brother and sister, who were ejected once a child entered the family. I find as I've got older my sensitivity has heightened and tonight for no real reason my eyes have flooded with tears thinking about them all. I couldn't imagine parting with my little girl and would sell everything I owned to prevent it. The older chap had lost his owner to cancer and just wanted affection and recognition. The younger pair were so nervous and just clung to each other. I'm sure I won't sleep much tonight thinking about them all. My friends favor the younger dog who was there, who was two and at first very frightened, but took to me, probably because she could smell Crystal. She had a gentle nature, but had been beaten in her previous life by some very cruel children. They broke two of her ribs, before she was rescued by some construction workers who witnessed the savagery, literally from the scaffolding adjoining the scene. These 'macho men' interceded, collected money from all their compatriots and took her to the RSPCA who have returned her health. I'm amazed at how this little thing (8lbs), can forgive us as a species, following such a terrifying ordeal. She gradually settled into my arms for a slumber and a 'half eye' watch. All very upsetting and I admire the volunteer ladies who give their time love and devotion.

I hope they all find homes , some people are just so cruel. I hate to think of anyone being mean to anything. At least they are safe now but I hate to think of them in kennels my heart breaks for them , I once went to visit a sspca kennels and could not stop thinking about them all.

Wow. I hope they all get the homes they deserve. Poor things.

So many of these dogs in shelters, their history is a mystery. Some of them have been abused or neglected. Some just got lost, or displaced by priorities or the death of their loving owner. The fact that they are able to adapt or recover to be a loving affectionate dog again is a small miracle. Bless their little hearts!

I must admit, I am very much a coward when it comes to witnessing pain/suffering first hand so I avoid hospitals and shelters.


The only solace I take in my cowardice is the fact that I try to compensate for it by researching ways to reduce psychological suffering as a result of disease and trauma so that people can benefit from these via their clinicians.


Therefore, your ability to express your sympathy and hurt at such observations as those you witnessed at the shelter gives testimony to your very loving and caring nature.


I, too, admire the volunteers... Learning about the atrocities that befall shelter animals and the volunteers who work to make these animals better instills a renewed motivation to support all animal causes which aim to reduce pain and suffering in our little furry friends.

It breaks my heart just reading this, so I totally understand why this affected you so much. Human beings can be so horrifically cruel and abhorrent, and yet these sweet creatures are *still* willing to open themselves up to us. We can learn more about ourselves from dogs than from our fellow human beings, imo.

God bless those construction workers who saved their lives. I always find it amazing that sometimes it's the biggest, 'hardest' types of people that open their hearts and their wallets in situations like this.

How these little ones ever learn to trust and love 'humans' is beyond me :(

I have read on here so many have said they know of yorkys at pounds i just do not understand how anyone can do that to a dog must less a yorky. They are so loving.

Oh heartbreak :cry:

An update everyone. The little brother and sister duo are leaving this weekend, to a retired couple in the Suffolk countryside. Like me, they were heartbroken at seeing the little girl clinging to her bigger brother and were thrilled to be accepted as their new 'mum and dad'. Apparently the home takes the 'adoptees' out to view the new conditions etc and the lady burst out with tears watching them eventually playing with the leaves in the garden. They're all certainly going to have a happy Xmas. My friends collect theirs tomorrow too and are busy buying toys, food etc etc. Hopefully a new friend for Crystal, whose only close friend is the ground floor neighbor's cat, with whom she has a very happy relationship. I'm pleased for the cat too, as the poor creature gets left out, as her owners work in London and we bring her up here most days, for a snooze with her 'Highness', until her owner gets home.

My wife would love another Yorkie, we thought of getting a pup, so we could train her to use the pee tray etc. I'm just concerned in case it upset Crystal, who maybe would feel she was being put to one side maybe? Alternatively they would have two beds to share in and would be company for each other, playing and chasing about. My wife's daughter has two, a mother and baby duo and watching them is of course double the fun? What do you think folks?
