Well, I'm not sure if you should listen to me because I am a bad influence. But I would have done the same thing.

You may want to invest in the book How to Potty Train Your Dog in 7 Days. It takes longer than 7 days, but it is definitely helpful.

By the way, welcome to YT. I don't know what I would do without all these great people to guide me in all things yorkie.

I'm no expert on the subject but I can tell you what as worked for me. Here goes. I don't let him have run of the house. That means I keep him confined to the area I'm in the most. I have gate's up in keep him in the room. I have a ex pen I put him in when I'm out of the room or out of the house. I take him out often. He now goes to the door and barks when he wants out, it's funny because if he gets alone in another room he will have a accident but never does when I'm in the room. I foster a lot of dogs and I totally agree with the no free roam of the house. When I get a new foster pup, they stay in the room I am in, and are harnessed to something so they can't wander off. If you have baby gates this works also. Our house is kinda open floor plan so we can't do that.

First thing in the morning, when she wakes up, take her outside. I prefer that dogs go pee outside. Keep the smell out of the house. After breakfast and a little play time, outside again (maybe an hour later?). Then usually it's nap time for the dogs. When lunch time comes around, food, then pee/poop again. It really helps to feed meals on a schedule instead of free feeding. Same time food goes in, usually same time it comes out.

Anytime after they wake from a nap, outside again. My boy Toto was not well potty trained when we got him. He is still not 100%. If he needs to go, he does not tell me. My Uni tells me when she needs to go (or she will go in one of the bathtubs or shower), that is what I call 100% potty trained. So since Toto isn't totally trained, I really try not to let him have the opportunity to have an accident. I take him out often.

Another way you may think of it is, for example, think of us humans. We know we are supposed to go in bathrooms. But if we really need to go and we can't find a bathroom, what do we do? We pee behind a bush, in a dark alley, in the forest, etc. If you can't hold it anymore you just find a place to go! Dogs are the same. If they feel like going, they will go some place away from their food and bed and just go. So don't give them that opportunity. Take her out often and on a schedule.

Has Toto peed in the house lately? Yes. And it was my fault. I didn't take him out and he needed to go, so he went. :(

Welcome to Yorkie talk :) I am sure you will find some good information here. For lilah we have baby gates limiting her run of the house and have to keep her potty pad very clean if we expect her to use it, she stayed in her ex pen when I was gone at least til he was over a year. Lilah still does not understand that rugs are not potty pads and maybe she never will so we don't keep area rugs around. Good luck with your endeavor! :longyorkie:

I would try the Xpen technique with her if you are trying to potty pad train!! Start with a small area with just her bed and potty pad.... gradually enlarge the area...this worked with all 4 of mine! welcome to YT and the best of luck to you!!!

Ditto to all of the advice. I did exactly the same thing except I trained mine to go on potty pads (she still will potty outside too...double bonus). Every time she went on the potty pad I made a big deal out of it and I rewarded a treat. She is on a schedule with her food and her potty because consistency is the key. As the other said, she did not get free run of the house. She was either tethered to me, or in her expen or crate. You want to make sure you give them the best chance at being successful. Do not her have run of the house.

Even though she is pretty much potty trained, I will from time to time reinforce it by rewarding her with a treat. Every so many days, I will take her to potty pad and it is now to the point where she will potty on pad on command. Of course she gets a big ole kiss and big ole piece of skinless boiled chicken (her favorite treat). One more thing. If you do use treats to trained her make sure she doesn't do the fake peeing thingy to get the treats. I fell for this one when I was training her to go outside. It wasn't until I switched to the potty pads that I could see she was squatting (and not peeing) to get the treats.
