Allergic in Texas! Hi everyone! I just joined today in hopes of getting some true advice on what to do with my yorkie, Ella. She will be 8 in April. Her ear infections, skin problems are out of control. I've tried everthing-- steroids, antibiotics antihistamines, expensive medicated shampoos--everything. I feel helpless. The steroids really help but I know they are not good, at all. I appreciate any tips and advice. Thinking of starting coconut oil baths to help with the itching. She scratches endlessly and is loosing (has lost) a lot of hair on her lower back and hind legs. My poor baby girl. |
Hi - glad you found us...we have a lot of allergy dogs here, including 2 of mine. For allergies, definitely read this entire thread from the Library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html What meds have you tried besides steroids? Bc there is also Atopica, Apoquel, Temaril-P. Atopic and Apoquel can often be miracle drugs for these allergy kiddos. Are they year round allergies? If yes, then Atopcia, Apoquel, or allergy testing/shots/drops are your best bets. If seasonal, then steroids are not a bad idea, despite their downside. Another things...given you're seeing the combo of recurrent skin and ear issues, coupled with hair loss -- please read this and see if there are any other symptoms of Cushings, which can result in all 3 of those symptoms plus many more diffuse symptoms. |

I've given her Apoquel but not in combination with Atopic. The doctor suggested Apoquel with Zyrtec. Her blood work is completely normal however the thyroid was on the lower side of normal, 1.3. They mentioned cushings but were not certain. So frustrating 😔. What is the treatment for Cushings? Thank you so much. I would do anything for Ella. |

Interesting that her thyroid is low, as that too often accompanies Cushings for some reason...my Wylie who has Cushings also has hypothryoid. Treatment for Cushings is varied bc it depends on what kind the dog has and other things as well. It is usually managed with rather toxic medications, given in low dosages...even though the meds are nasty, many dogs don't experience any side effects bc the dosages are quite low. Do any of the other Cushings symptoms seem to fit (via the link I gave)? |
Hi; some of the symptoms but not all. I'm going to see the vet next week. Thank you for all your advice! |
Please be super careful with the steroids. I adopted a perfect little Yorkie who had pollen and food allergies. The vet that her original owners used gave her too many steroids and she became a type 2 diabetic because of the over use of steroids that damaged her ability to make insulin. She was Zoee (photo with orange ball in mouth) and we had 5 wonderful years with her, but she died of a seizure due to low blood sugar. She was the little Yorkie that made us love little Yorkies. |
Thank you so much. She has been off steroids now for some time. I'm taking her back to the vet this week. We need more Apoquel and I'm going to ask for some Atopica. Does anyone have any holistic/home remedy types of baths or solutions to help with the itching? |
Allergies can be SO frustrating! I hope you find something that works for her. I just want to say that giving steroids can be necessary and can be used with minimal to no issues. My Georgie who passed this past year an old man, took Temeril P for many many years without any problems at all. When he was having bouts of severe allergies, the med was increased and then, when he was doing better, the med was decreased. It managed him fairly well. I tried other things and they simply did not work. Steroids ideally should be given every other day so that the adrenals still function. I always tried to do that with George....then when he had flares, I would increase. I just wanted to add this because many people are so afraid to use steroids and sometimes they are very necessary. |
Thank you everyone! I know how much we all love our babies and we want the best for them. I just hope that this goes away soon :( I'm trying to upload a photo so you can see my beauty! :) |
