Baby Bully Yorkie! Hello, I am desperate!! I have 16 month old female Yorkie who has basically behaved well all this time although she's a little wild even for a puppy. She lives with a 6 yr. old Lab mix male, a 4 yr.old female something- who is her "wild mate" and a 2 yr.old female poodle who basically does nothing all day and bothers no one. The house situation has not changed- we've all lived "happily" ever after. Suddenly, this adorable Yorkie went vicious on the poodle- growls something fierce at her-scares her so much that the poodle won't come out of her kennel in the morning. Of course, this is upsetting to everyone- adults get upset, the 4yr. old playmate goes wild and joins in on the bullying- not a great way to wake up. After a bit, everyone settles down and begins to eat- big dogs steal little dogs food, but things are better. In the afternoon, the Yorkie chases the poodle again but it's not so vicious. If anyone shows attention to the poodle- the Yorkie growls and mounts her. This doesn't look like innocent play to me, especially in the morning. The only thing that changed is that the poodle broke her leg and required surgery and intense watching over- but that was during the summer. Is the Yorkie resentful of this or what is wrong? Most importantly, how do I fix it??? |
Hi and welcome to YT :). It sounds like your yorkie is having some aggression issues with the poodle and in general - the mounting and bullying is evidence of this. I'm not great with training about aggression, but hopefully someone here has experience. But I would continue to intervene whenever you see aggressive behavior, and I'd feed the poodle in a safe area for the poodle...don't allow food to be stolen by anybody else. When I feed my 4, I stand right in the middle of the 4 bowls so I can watch them all and so that nobody gets stolen from. |
Just a question, is your whole pack, spayed or neutered? I like Ann's suggestion on the feeding. Either feed in separate rooms, or stand between doggies when you feed them together. I had to relatively recently resort to feeding my female Blackie separate to my male, as she would bully over into his food dish, she would gulp her food down to be done first then try for his, this meant he gulped his food down even faster. The logical outcome was that he often threw up his food...... If you are kennelling all your dogs overnight, then what I would do is let the female poodle out first. Walk her, or take her to the backyard to eliminate. Then I would let the Yorkie out next. If your Yorkie goes for her, the Yorkie goes back in their kennel... Next time you take the Yorkie out it will be on lead. The idea here is to control the interactions of your dogs. Moderate their activities, and ensure that excitement which naturally builds when playing or after food, or going out to exercise is controlled by you...... |
Dogs will also go after the weaker dogs. Dont know why. I know birds will kill another bird that is weak. Least mother birds will do this. Dogs attacking the weak i have no idea why. I would becareful letting them out alone. The pack will joinin. Was the poodle an alpha dog? Maybe your yorky is trying to asume the top position in the pack. I do believe dogs communicate. We took our yorky and papilon to the park. My pap. Lunges after other dogs. Boo played with all the dogs while we held the pap back. When we got home the pap was real rough with the yorky. Almost punishing boo for playing with the other dogs. Next trip to the park boo acted like the pap and has ever since. |
Are all of them fixed? Could there be something wrong with the poodle like she is sick or something? |
