new owner getting a yorkie in about 3 weeks i am confused do you put in a pee pad in the crate when he is young? |
The cage should be small enough so he WANT pee where he sleeps. Put it somewhere else. I put mine the first place she had an accident. |
so you have to get up in the night to let him out? |

Any puppy thats young most likely need to potty every two hours. My yorky was 4 months when i got him. He supposidly was pad and outside trained but would not go outside unless i walked him at first. Now he goes right out and lets me know when he needs to go. Hes eight months now. But my papilon was a baby when i got her at 8 weeks. So i took her out 20 minutes after food or drink. Then right when she woke up from sleeping. Then at night she would sleep with me. Im a light sleeper so if she started getting restess i took her out. Well im a senior so getting up every two hours got rough. So i had a fence like area they call it xpen here. I put her a bed at one end then a pee pad on the other. I also bought a large heavy piece of plastic under it all cause the pad would leak. If she got restless rather than go out side i put her on her pad at night. As her bladder grew i took her out late at night and early morning. She was a jewel to train. I do have trouble with boo going dirty inside. He takes forever to go poo outside. Soon as he wees hes ready to come in. Plus its cold. I need to get pads for inside for that. But clean carpets every couple of weeks. He dont do it all the time. More than i want tho. He gets to distracted outside. |
Piper is an adult, but I still watch her for restlessness, "nosing" around, and the like...then take her outside. With puppies, within about 1/2 hour of eating and even less time after drinking, I'd take 'em outside. However, if they don't do their 'business' pretty quickly, bring them back in...In other words, potty outside and playing are two distinct and separate activities! |
Hi and welcome to YT :). It depends on what you want to do - do you want to pad train your puppy or outside train him? If you want a pad at night, then his fenced off area should include a bed and a pad. |
