clothing for yorkies that won't tangle their hair. Hi everyone I have a little 18 week old little yorkie girl named Ruby. I am having a problem with her hair tangling very badly. I was hoping to get advice and tips to keep her from tangling so badly. We live in the Peruvian Andes and have no central heat so she needs to have warm sweaters or comfy jackets everyday and they really seem to be making the tangle problem much worse so I am wondering if there is a special type of clothing that won't cause such a problem. Thanks Debbie |
I have no expertise in this area, but maybe if you layer what Ruby wears...? What about starting with a soft little t-shirt (kinda snug-fitting), then layer the heavier item over that? Just a thought, but as I said, I have no idea if it'd actually help with Ruby's coat tangling. Living in the Andes must be wonderfully amazing and come with lots of challenges...You and Ruby stay snuggly warm!! |
I have heard that satin lined clothing will not matt or tangle your pups hair. I myself have no knowledge of this but have had clothing tangle my pups hair. I now keep her pits cut short and only put clothes on her for a few days at a time making sure to groom her after taking them off. |
I use satin lining and it does help. I also spray Cali with Velus Static Stabilizer before I put the dress on. It also helps some, however she does not tangle badly generally. Good luck - clothes with long haired Yorkies has always been an issue I think. |
If you put on a fairly tight under layer, it helps with less tangling, but there will still be tangles if her hair has any amount of length to it. Also I put coconut oil on Uni's hair before I put on a shirt. There are always tangles, but the oil helps to comb out the tangles. Another thing, which I know sounds counterintuitive since you live in a cold climate, shave the hair that goes under the clothes, and then put on more layers. Then you don't have to worry about the tangles. My Toto has great hair, so long and silky, but when I put clothes on him it tangles and since his hair is so long it takes forever to get out. I've since shaved him on his saddle, left his head and arms and legs plus tail long. So when he's dressed he looks "normal". But I still think he's cute with no clothes. Looks like a lion cut. |
Like others have suggested, keeping them in a short cut on the body will prevent tangles. Since she needs to wear clothing 24-7, this seems like the best route...unless you want to wrap her hair like a Show dog. I have Turbo in long hair right now & it gets chilly here @ night, so I put a tee on him. I brush him b4 I put it on & brush him again the next day. |
Thanks everyone for the advice! I really wanted to grow out her hair. I have never seen coconut oil here, I'm wondering if I used a leave in conditioner it might help with the comb out? I was also wondering if it might be worse since she is a baby, I was thinking that maybe her hair is changing and that is the problem. Her color is really changing a lot, I don't know if she could be getting her adult hair this young, any thoughts? Thanks again |
Yes that could very well be it. Puppy hair is pretty coarse and the adult hair should be silky. The growing out phase is hard. If you can't find coconut oil locally you can order from Amazon. If you use leave in conditioner make sure its for dogs. |
You could use emu oil, too, if you cannot get coconut oil. You will only be using a tiny bit of oil, rub on your hands, then massage into her hair in such a way so as not to tangle her hair. A slippery under garment, like silk, satin, or nylon, may help act as a deterrent to tangling...it works for human hair as a pillowcase. |
Thanks everyone, I think I would have a problem getting a liquid through customs here. I have never seen either of those oils here, what do you think would happen if I used a tiny bit of olive oil? I tried a snug fitting tee and that is what gave the biggest problem but I haven't tried a silk under layer. I will talk to my vet and see if she can get something like that for me. Thanks again |
I think olive oil would be fine. Hot oil treatments for human hair use it. Coconut oil is solid at 75 degrees F..starts to melt at 76 degrees Fahrenheit. |
Thanks, I'll give it a try and let you know how it works. |
