Oh Dear, Now I've Done It... 1 Attachment(s) The first time Piper barked incessantly for a treat, I ultimately gave-in, as I share a paper thin wall w/new neighbors (who seem a bit intolerant). She hadn't behaved in this manner before and now, my own fault, she does this grr-rough, growl-y, into out-right barking, all the while bouncing or play-standing and being just so danged funny and cute (but baaadd, I know) until she gets treat. Truly this is not some sort of ingrained, long-term mistake I made...I think I maybe 'gave-in' twice. But this brilliant, determined, relentless--and beyond adorable--little Yorkie critter of mine is just too quick for me sometimes--this being one of them. And now she's seems to be using 'her voice' more frequently for all sorts of immediate attention (like right now she's trying to get me off computer)--not a habit I want her to pick-up. So once again I turn to my Yorkie Guides/Mentors/Dear Friends for any possible solutions and always with sincere appreciation. Doesn't my little lambchop look the innocent, though!?! Just love her beyond... |
I read an article recently about a similar behavior. It was on begging and that it was actually ingrained into their instinct over the time with mankind. The more pathetic they looked/acted the more food they got. It became a passive "hunting" skill :P Kimchi is a masterful beggar and uses all sort of tones, looks and such to get what she wants. The only thing I can figure to do in this case is train her to be quiet on command. ^^; |
Both sound like you are describing my Cody lol. The crying, whining, the pathetic looks, the eyes lol, so cute and funny, sometimes I give in, sometimes I don't. When I first got him he did not ALLOW me to be on the phone lol,he wanted me to be fully focused on HIM. He would bark incessantly, I would have to end my call. I had just gotten him and didn't want to scold him, I was still in the trust and bonding stage. After 2 weeks of this, enough was enough and I put an end to his demands. All is well with the phone, I am still battling with the computer lol. 95% of the time I ignore him, but he is very persistent, I have to use my lap top until I get my desk top repaired, he will take his toys and throw them on the lap top or try to lay on top of it lol. Cody is my 5th yorkie, so I know how they are, and I know the consequence I will pay if I give in lol. He knows I am the boss, but I do at times just have to give in to him, he is just to darn cute to deny what he wants right then and there lol. So I am no help lol sorry. |
Lol, she is training you VERY well :D!!! Smart little thang! She is adorable. |
When my husband is on his laptop Sophie will come to him and rub her nose on his leg over and over again if he does not put his computer down she will start to whine, jump and spin until he puts it aside. She also does not want us near each other. She will push my husbands hand aside if he even touches me. They sure do know how to get their way Sophie is relentless but oh so cute. |
I think when our dogs bark. While were on the phone. That they think were talking to them. I mean no one else is there butthem. They probablyget frstrated with us. Like what do you want. Lol |
Haven I mentioned lately that I just love you guys?! Cuz I do!!! You always make me feel better and lighten my mood!! Good knowing I'm in such good company with various Piper challenges! Smooches all around! |

I don't know how effective this would be. After barking, At least try getting them to sit up or do another trick before treating them. And, try to treat them while they are trying to get your attention, hopefully sitting up, before they bark. Positive reinforcement on the good behavior. |

when I give in to him, I give him a command, sit, down, I gave in to him, but, he worked for that treat. Thanks Mark |
Lilah charm also barks very emphatically when my love gets home- she would bark until he would pick her up and he felt used :embar: so he started having her do a trick for him before he would pick her up. The act of her complying to obedience took her away from the barking and then she had the opportunity to be successful and be rewarded- yay! :) however, my little lady is still very very pushy with my man- shovin her head ad face into his hand when she sees it for example- not so much with me (even though we have an excellent bond and I am totally mama) but I also have five lovely children and am already very disinclined to reward negative or pushy behavior (even if it's cute) with my attention. Lol, so a different relationship I suppose...she does get in my business when I am excercising in the early mornings but after a bit she will usually settle in next to me and just chew on a toy. |
Dexter isn't much of a barker in general, but I swear the cat aggravates him on purpose to MAKE him bark. She sits on the other side of the baby gate and provokes Dex til he loses his mind and starts barking. Dex has an Iris pen with his kennel/bed in it and when he won't stop barking we tell him he has to go to bed. The first couple of times, I just popped him into the pen, told him firmly 'Quiet Dex' and left him for 5 minutes, then let him out. He ran straight back to the gate and started barking again, so I picked him up, repeated the 'Quiet Dex', popped him into timeout for another 5 minutes and let him out. That was enough for him, no more barking and he gave up on the cat :) Now all I have to do is say, 'Quiet Dex, you want to go to bed?' and he quiets and runs, I rarely have to timeout him now. I don't mind the quieter little 'oofs' he makes when he's being tormented by the cat, just the loud over-excited barks earn him a timeout. I also don't shush him when he hears an outside noise because I consider that his protective warning bark. |
I think I might just instantly leave the room the moment she uses that voice/technique for a while, to show her that now the net result gets her nothing but left alone. (Besides, it's much easier to resist when you aren't looking at them!) :):D:) |
Wow, thank you for the really good ideas. I'm definitely going try that leaving the room bit, as Piper hates being ignored! I have no problem with her little 'indoor' voice, it's the loud, incessant, backing away barking that doesn't work. Thank you for giving me a variety of great, do-able suggestions--which, in turn, makes me optimistic, determined and hopeful! |
YorkietalkJilly~~Thank you for suggesting I leave room, as it quiets Piper; I can see her wheels turning and though it may take a couple of times, she gets the message and most assuredly does not like being ignored or left alone!! I must say (my place is very small) that I found myself shaking my head and smiling as I "hid" in my, also very small, bathroom. Wait-What??! She has the run of the place while I'm "trapped" in the bathroom???? The things we do and go through for our little lamb chops and I wouldn't change a thing!! I find such joy in having Piper--even laughing at myself trying to train her! Thanks again! "Dogs love company. They place it first on their short list of needs." |
Hiding! LOL That's funny! LOL Thanks for sharing the great idea, I'll try to remember that training technique... sorta the opposite of putting "them" in time out! ;) |
