im a new mom Hi Everyone i am a new mom to adorable little man, he was born 8 weeks ago and we waited for him patiently till he came home. we got him Royal Canin junior Puppy food as everyone told us its the best including the breeder, my problem now is he does not eat well, his been home for three days and in the beginning i thought he was just a bit overwhelmed and he will take it soon. on day one he fed with the breeder before he came home, day two he ate a little in the morning not eve 1/4 of the required feed, lunch time he had a little more and for supper a small amount again. day three same thing. should i wait a little to see if he will pick up or should i change his food, i also read that they prone to low blood sugar and am just a bit worried his sugar levels will drop. please help!!! thanks sharol:animal-pa |
Having some nutri-cal or something similar is good at this stage for low blood sugar. I hear Karo syrup is also a decent substitute. You'll only need to give a dab or so, when they seems either shaky or so, but they'll need to eat something more substantial (sometimes it does help with appetite, too). You might also try adding wet food to the dry. I also had to adjust to the fact that they got tiny tummies and may not eat as hardy, but frequently. If anything, you might even try some human baby food, just be sure the ingredients don't include anything like onions, garlic or other not so good stuff for dogs. My girl also went through some periods where she didn't eat as well, and this is normal as long as they aren't showing any signs of deterioration. Dog foods of high premium quality also has more calories and nutrients than regular dogs foods so they don't have to eat as much of it. The regular tends to have fillers that make them feel full for longer but not as nutritious. |

Teddy was sent home with the advice to continue goats milk and boiled chicken for three days and then Royal Canin but, like your little one, he didn't seem too enamored by RC so I changed him to Acana and now he eats a lot and snorts the whole time... I know a lot of people swear by RC but I think, like people, dogs have their own preferences and those preferences are not always what we think they should be! Dunno, just my experience for you to consider. |
When we got Sissy she was not a good eater unless we sprinkled a little Parmesan cheese. She has now turned into a little piglet who scarfs down her food as fast as her brother, Bubba. |

Welcome to YT! And congrats! I would be wanting to know how she ate when at the breeder's...do you know? You can supplement w/ Nutrical every 4 hours if it makes you feel better, there is nothing wrong w/ doing that. It contains sugars, fats, and a bunch of nutrients - so small amounts will do no harm. I'd try sprinkling some Paremsan cheese on her food and see if that nice pungent smell entices her. Let us know how it goes. :) |
I fed Magnus/Zoey 5 times a day in small amounts. One suggestion is soak the kibbles (assuming it's kibbles and not canned) in chicken broth (no sodium added). Another common suggestion would be to free feed until he seems to be eating regularly. Good luck~ |
