Just called the vet!! Hi all I had posted a ? asking if anyone elses pup had to have blood tests before they got "fixed" because Bella is going in tomorow for this. Well, I just called the vet and asked why she is having this blood work done and they said it is because they want to see if she is predisposed to some disease that yorkies and smaller dogs get that would make the anesthesia not be safe for them. I asked why Louie did not have these tests before his being fixed and she said, she didnt really know but maybe the doctor saw something in Bella and just wanted to check it out. Im going to be asking him LOTS of ?? tomorow. |
Well good luck- be sure to write your questions down as they come to you... |

ALL TOY DOGS SHOULD HAVE A COMPLETE CBC BLOOD PANEL before ANY surgery. Bravo for you vet! You do not want some hidden condition to cause the death of your baby while in surgery....teeth cleaning, spay, neuter etc. Example: I once had to have surgery on a 4 month old puppy. I dropped her off and just as I was returning home the vet called and said surgery was a no go! He said her blood was missing a "factor" which allows it to clot. She would have bled to death during or shortly after the surgery. He would not have known about this condition without a complete CBC blood panel. So yes....they all should have blood tests prior to surgery. There are a number of conditions which could be a problem.....blood clotting, liver disease, kidney disease, or any type of infection in their body. You only want HEALTHY animals to undergo surgery. Can you imagine any human doctor doing surgery with out first doing a number of pre-surgerial tests? |
Thank you so much for posting this. That is what the nurse at the vet said when I called today. It is a precaution so that nothing terrible happens to them. Yes I am very thankful that I have a thourogh vet. |
I hope everything is ok!!! Good luck tomorrow! |
Both of my girls had blood work done before their surgery...we didn't understand why at the time, but we should learned that it helps them see if they are healthy enough for safe surgery!!! Good Luck tomorrow...things will go great!!! Ask all the questions you want, thats what we are here for!! |
I highly recommend everyone to get pre anesthetic blood panel before any kind of surgery on your little ones. It measures the white and red blood cells, the proteins, also detects if the kidney and liver are functioning properly. Not only does it assist the vet in what is the proper dosage of anesthesia it will detect problems (if any prior to surgery) if their body can't desolve the residuals of the anesthesia properly, it is the best for your kid. |
