New Yorkie Mommy! Hi everyone! I just adopted a 5 year old Yorkie baby. My family and I have barely had her a week, and she already has me wrapped around her finger. I have a few questions. First, her previous owner had her on Sentry Pro (over the counter) for fleas and ticks. She weighs 4 1/2 lbs. What do most people get from the vet for their babies? I have a vet appt scheduled for this Thursday. Next, what foods are good for these little ones? She's been on Purina Special Diet. My chihuahua eats Natural Balance. Any other advice anyone has is appreciated! :) |
Hi and welcome to YT and CONGRATS on your new kiddo, how fabulous! She sounds like a doll, to have you already wrapped around her paw :D. Your Natural Balance is a nice food - and I wouldn't hesitate to feed it instead of the Purina. Other kibbles I like are Nature's Logic, Solid Gold, Natures Variety, Orijen/Acana. |
Welcome to YT! It sure doesn't take them long to get us 'trained', does it. Looking forward to seeing pic's of her. Your vet will be able to tell you what you need from him to keep her healthy. Heart worm preventitive is very important. You can get some that will also work on fleas and ticks. Wylie's Mom has some good food suggestions. |
Hello my name is Cheryl and welcome to YorkieTalk. There is a wealth of information here and it's all yours for the absorbing. Hope you find what you need. Again welcome to you and your fur babies. |
Congratulations on your new 5 year old! So many foods out there! Lots of food threads to peruse here at YT. We're currently using these two for our two dogs: Toy Breed Complete Health Senior Deboned Chicken & Oatmeal Recipe Solid Gold Health Products for Pets I'm very new at owning small dogs so relied heavily on comments here at YT, dogfoodadvisor.com for ratings and to learn how to compare ingredients and some of the analysis provided AT the manufacturer's websites. Formulas seem to change all the time, go to the manufacturers' website for the most up to date ingredients and guaranteed analysis. Fromm sounded like a very good food as well. :) You could always pick a couple and post up a thread with the two choices, lots of comments that way! I find those to be fun! LOL Unless........... ;) |
Welcome to YT! All the food suggestions that have been given are good. My pup weights under 4 lbs. I feed Fromm - never had a recall. For heartwarming, fleas and such I use Revolution because my vet recommends it and because it comes in doses for small dogs. We really like pictures so will be waiting to see one! |
Hello, welcome to YT! :) |
I think I would switch her to the Natural Balance. It will make your life easier to have them both on the same food. When you switch her, do it slowly. Go a couple of days with 3/4 Purina and 1/4 Natural Balance. After seeing how she tolerates this move to 1/2 and 1/2 then to 1/4 Purina and 3/4 Natural Balance, then to a total switch. By switching slowly you get to see how they are adjusting to the new food and avoiding digestive upset. |
