Possible to split Iverhart (heartworm pill) in half? Just wondering if it is possible. I read on some other random dog forum that it was possible, so I did a search on YT and the only threads I saw regarding to this topic were for Heartgard/Heartgard Plus chewables, where the medicine isn't evenly distributed, but I think I saw other posters here on YT mention that Iverhart and Sentinel (or maybe it was Trifexis?) were a bit more evenly distributed? What are your thoughts? |
I don't know but I would check with my vet. |

You would need to ask you vet and maybe even the company that makes it. Please do not use trifexis though it is very dangerous. Also wasn't Iverhart recalled before? |
I feel more safe using Heartgard because it's been around longer. My yorkie is 3 pounds and I give her the 1-25 lbs tablet but I do think Sentinel is probably better for little dog dosages. I just don't give Sentinel because it also has de-worming and I rather not give extra things that I don't need. You probably shouldn't split the Iverhart because the piece you leave can actually have the medication but you wouldn't be able to know. If you want the smaller dosage you can try Sentinel. As lovetodream said, PLEASE don't use Trifexis. It's more expensive but that doesn't mean it's good.. it has caused a lot of deaths. |
Do you mean not to cut the pills into smaller pieces? I have to cut Scooters because it's way too big for him to take and although they say it's chewable he won't have any part of chewing it. I cut it into quarters then hid them in something he likes such as chicken or cheese. |

When I have a question about medication, I like to contact the drug company making the drug. There are actually vets out there that may not be right up to date on cutting pills....I would go straight to the horses mouth. I will share what I was told by a drug company I was questioning once...."If the pill/tablet is scored, it is safe to cut on the scored mark. If the tablet is NOT scored, or if it is enteric coated, be on the safe side and do not cut it." |

It is scored so apparently it's ok to cut. I wish they would take into consideration how small some breeds are and make the pills smaller. |
