Bringing Home puppy to older dog
 

I currently have a Beagle that is 7 yrs old. We are looking to get another puppy, probably a Yorkie or Yorkie mix. (Still Looking) Any advice on how to bring the puppy in to meet the beagle? Has anyone had a similar experience like this? The beagle is used to other dogs, because I had a Cocker which I had to put to sleep a few weeks ago. The beagle seems lonely now. I have always wanted a little dog and now I can get what I want and not what the kids wanted.

Also, I know this is a purebred Yorkie site. But I am more prone to getting a Yorkie/Maltese mix. I really can't afford the Yorkie price. Any comments regarding that? I can't understand why the Morkies are so expensive too, being a mix. I have checked shelters everywhere for them too. Is there a demand for small breed dogs?? I don't want to breed or show them. Just keep as a family pet in our loving home. Any Yorkie fans in Colorado??

Okay - regarding mixes. I had decided about 2 years ago that I wanted to adopt or rescue a Yorkie. It ended up taking about a year for me to find the dog that was best for my family. It took a lot of persistance, but it did finally happen and we ended up with our wonderful Sandy who is around 7-9 years old (a cairn-yorkie mix). I could have just bought a mix, but as you said they are expensive, around what I was willing to pay for a purebred Yorkie, and I couldn't see paying that kind of money when there were dogs out there who needed good homes (this is ME, I have no problem with other people doing this)

As far as bringing a puppy home to an older dog, Sandy ended up doing SO WELL when we brought Tia home. Since day one she's been like a Mommy/Sister mix to her. The only thing we had to make sure of was to give Sandy a lot of extra love and attention, and that seemed to ease the transition for her :) I hope this helps you a little :D

We brought Lil Bit home to a nearly 1 year old chihuahua and worried we might have problems.....since the puppy will be a bit active and Apple had settled into a nice routine of eating....sleeping...and playing.... (the eating and sleeping she learned from our aging greyhound).

As mentioned before, they turned into a great mother/sister pair. They adore each other and play and sleep together ALL the time. I have even begun letting Lil Bit stay out free in the house when I'm away for a while because Apple seems to keep her out of trouble........("SO FAR"....).

As for mixed breed dogs.....LOVE THEM!!!! I actually ended up with Apple by 'de-fault'...I had purchased a yorkie/chihuahua mix that looked just like a perfect little yorkie.....but she died 5 days later and she was replaced with Apple...she was the breeders 'pick-of-the-litter' since she had no more yorkie mix puppies to replace mine.........I would buy another yorkie/chi mix in a minute. I have no intention to breed or show anything.....just great little dogs!!!

Thanks for all your info. Do you think I should worry that my Beagle will hurt the new pup? My beagle is pretty active and friendly. I won't be leaving the pup out alone with the beagle whenever I am not home. It just seems like the Beagle is going to be so huge with the small puppy!

What is an average price for a yorki-puppy mix to pay if that is what you end up having to do? Is 400 to 500 not reasonable?? That's what I have been seeing everywhere? Even want ads, saying they will pay that.

I didn't pay much for Stewie -- $475, but he was sick (didn't know it at the time). You should be able to get a pure bred yorkie for under $500.

I brought two tiny yorkie pups into a house with a standard poodle, a westie and a persian cat!! I kept the puppies in my bedroom for the first few days to get acclimated and would bring them out into the rest of the house when the dogs were outside and the cat was in the laundry room. Eventually, as the puppies got stronger I introduced them to the bigger dogs. My westie loves to play with the puppies, but my poodle is a little jealous and I watch him very closely and never leave them unsupervised. My dogs know that I am the leader of the pack and my poodle respects that. The food in the dog bowl is "my food" and they will not growl or bite if another dog eats out of the same bowl.

I am still very careful though and my yorkie is always supervised. (My daughter took the second yorkie to college with her so he is not here all the time)

The cat and the yorkie play very well together and I will often leave them in the same room to keep each other company when I leave the house on errands.

I am sure your beagle will do great if you show him lots of love and affection too and don't neglect him because there's a new baby in the house. It's similar to bringing a new human baby home to siblings. If you get a toy/treat for one the other should get one too.
