10 weeks old- Baths Hi everyone, i have a little girl yorkie with us since she was 6/7 weeks. She is doing pretty good, she was just a baby in the beginning, sleeping a lot and now have a lot of energy to play and that comes with a lot of mess! I try to not give her so many baths, but sometimes she stinks too much that noone wants to be around her kkk. Like, My schedule is a little crazy going in and out of the house with kids, driving all the time so i keep her blanket in her crate and since is too big for her i keep a pee pad on the other side. She goes pee and poo there with no accidents inside the crate, BUT sometimes she steps on the poo and makes a big mess ..,.getting her all dirty and smelly. So, last bath was friday...she was dirty. Today Wednesday she was already on the limit and needed another bath. My question is: how often should i bathed her? is this too much? If it is, how can i take the smell and poo awau without bath? i try to get a cloth and clean but sometimes doesnt seen to work. |

Keep in mind that like us Yorkies have hair and for them if you bath too often their skin can and will dry out. Its important to rinse all of the shampoo out and apply a conditioner and rinse again. Also keeping her pee & poo pads away from and not so close to her sleeping/play area will cut down on the need for frequent bathing. Pups at this age need room to roam and to play and being is such close quarters isn't allowing her much room to do that. I would suggest a different set up if you can. One that provides all the necessities and still keeps her safe when not being supervised. I bath my pups once a month in the warm months or if needed more and once every 6-8 weeks in the winter. |
My little girl has been getting a bath every week since we brought her home at 9 weeks. She is now 8 months and has never had dry skin. I use Yorkie Splash & Shine and detangler, which I get online on their website. Just make sure all the shampoo gets rinsed out. She also gets groomed once a month. |
She is beyond adorable! Love those ears sooo much! |
:) Hee hee! Love your little baby girl.... Well, our Harry is SUCH a boy - constantly in a mess - so we bathe him once a week, without fail....I couldn't bear for him to be on/in our bed in that smelly state....:D In-between times, we use Earthbath products (all totally natural, and made in the USA, so I have to import them...!!!) Welcome :: earthbath® - totally natural pet care you might like to have a look at their wipes, there are some specifically for puppies...:) |
You may think of getting her a playpen where she will have more room to walk away from the poop and not walk in it. I have one from Walmart that MeSo is in and her pee pad is at the back of it and her bed to the front where she will greet us when she gets up. If you would like I could get you a photo of my setup. You can find the playpens on craigslist all the time for pretty cheap, or if you have any swaps in your area on facebook. |
ZoE has had a bath every week (other than when she was spayed) since she was six weeks old. She sleeps in my bed, and I can't stand a stinky dog. There have been a few times, when due to our activities (beach, trail walking, etc ) she got extra dirty and had to have a bath midweek as well. |
I bathe Sheldon weekly, sometimes 2x a week, since he was eight weeks old. if I dont, he starts to look oily and scruffy...lol. |
I bathe Mia once a week. I plan to show her so I feel that she needs to get used to the grooming. I use a non-scented hypo-allergenic baby wipe on her face each night and brush her out every night. I also spritz with a freshening spray once or twice a week just because I want her to smell delicious. |
Your little one is just precious!:) We have a younger yorkie too and we have two different set ups. We have one in the family room where we stay most of the time and one in our bedroom where at bedtime she feels safe and sleeps. The way we have them set up really can help with this age sooo much. Our little girl also gets a bath every week keeps her smelling clean. She used to have problems with her bathroom times too.She would get it stuck on her somewhere and ohhhh what a mess she thought something had her and she would run to get it off and hide. Yes by the time I realized what had happened it was all over the place. So we have been there done that too. Oh fun:D but they do get through this stage pretty quick our little girl is doing much better. She now goes and sits in the nearest corner very quite so I can tell she's been busy but its not all over her any longer. Each one does so different she's my first that has acted like this out of 6 yorkies. |
I give cody a bath once a week because he smells. He is 3 y/o I use a oatmeal shampoo that you have to leave on for 10 minutes. The label reads it can be used for daily baths. I also use conditioner. To be safe and sure, check with your vet on how many times you can bathe your pup and what type of shampoo & conditioner should be used. |
I also give Luna a bath once a week. Not because she smells just because if I don't she looks like a homeless puppy. I have not found my favorite s shampoo yet though :( I have used splash and shine and it was good. I tried the mink stuff...( I forget the name) I LOVED the smell of this one! I'm still not overly impressed with any of them. But I think it's because she still has puppy hair, she is silky so she gets stringy if not bathed often. Her coat is not super shiny either. I'm hoping once she gets her big girl hair all grown in it will be different. |
I was bathing Bruiser 1/2 a week, but it has gotten cold out and here in Colorado it is a very dry cold. The groomer said I shouldn't bath him so much. So... same goes. We got a hair cut, and some sweaters to help eliminate the need for so many baths. Your baby is a cutie. I'm jealous of the ears. Bruiser has floppy ears. Hoping the cut helps them stand. |
I have try different setups... but she is still too young to have no accidents. I have a playpen that i leave on the main floor. on the hardwood floor, so if something happens is easy to clean. In the basement, i leave her in the bathroom and got a gate for the door. So she can be there without being locked in her crate. She was at the laundry before(main floor), but was barking so much in the middle of the night and my husband couldnt sleep. Thats why i left her in the downstairs bathroom for her new area. Also, today i was picking up my daughter at school and got her in the pet carrier as a car seat to drive to the school and play in the grass/school playground for a bit. is just a 8 minute drive, and she managed to poo on the car seat !!! ARGGG since the carrier is small, she step on her poo and all dirty. |
