shot question Luna went for her last round of puppy shots today. Vet days are the most stressful days ever for me!! She does not do well with shots! Vet does benadryl after our lesson learned from the very first shots. But she still just does not feel good after them and is just icky for the rest of the day. Today's shots made her very sore at the injection site. :( The vet told me the only shot she needs now is rabies and she is done. Our state or city does not require them by law. Should I get it anyhow? I just hate putting her through another shot. She is now 5 months old and they want to do rabies at 6 months. She is just at 3 pounds. I guess I just need another yorkie mommy opinion. |
I would definitely get my puppy a rabies shot. Mine all had them at age 16 weeks old. |
My vet will not do it till she is 6 months old? We talked about it today and she said not till then. I asked because I did not want to over do it with her other shots and rabies and she said she would not give rabies till 6 months old. I did not ask why I just assumed it was because she knew Luna does not do well with shots and because she is small and she just wanted to wait. |
If your dog were to bite someone and she was not vaccinated they would put her in quarantine away from you. Also there is not cure from rabies so if she got it she would have to be put to sleep. I would do rabies and not risk it. Nobody feels really great after shots and is sore. |
Our state law requires 16 weeks. I think it's fine to wait until 6 mos. |
Is rabies not required by law in your state? If so, you're lucky! While I think getting the rabies shot between 4 months and 6 months IS important, and then a booster a year later, after that I think it's ridiculous that I'm required by law to give my dog the shot every 3 years. The only reason I do it for legality reasons. I don't want to risk my dog being taken away from me or quarantined in case anything were to happen. I'm hoping in the future, it at least gets changed to every 5. Jackson can be sensitive to vaccines as well. He had a horrible reaction to lepto. Anywho, I think waiting until 6 months old is fine. Jackson didn't get his rabies shot until about that age. We're law breakers :p But, I think the DHP as puppies (I think they do it 3 or 4 times) and then again at one year is very important. I'll continue to do rabies every 3 years as per the law but I don't like it. So other than rabies, Jackson hasn't been vaccinated for anything since he was 1 (minus two bordatella nasal sprays) and he's now 6. I don't believe it to be necessary due to the extensive research that's been done on the topic. |
I would get it by some chance your dog bite someone and have to be tested for rabies since they hadnt had a rabies shot they would have to kill your dog to test it no joke. Also most groomers and kennels require it |
I agree my boy is a nipper. I would hate it if they took him away. But i will tell on my self at the risk of being fussed at. I only had one of my dogs i have raised get rabies shot. Mainly we never lived in the wild. And all my dogs lived inside. They never really cared about being outside only to potty. As i have grown older i have become a much more responsible dog owner. Both mine have shots but are much bigger than yours. |
