Doggie Doors I am looking to purchase a PetSafe dog door for our back sliding glass door. I think it will be very useful, but am a little nervous about getting my pups to use it. Does anyone have any experience with using doggie doors? How did your pups adjust to using it? Thanks! |
If you have dogs under 10 pounds they should not be going outside alone unless they are going into some kind of kenneled like thing that has a top otherwise they will either end up something's dinner or could even be stolen. I had used a doggy door with my dog for years (she is 17 pounds) until she had leg surgery in June and then was diagnosed with IBD now I have to go outside with her to know if she is pooing and the consistancy and I have to make sure she is not throwing up. |
I agree with love to dream. Since i got my yorky i would take some extra protection for them . I love doggie doors so much easier. But yorkies can be prey for wild animal or hawks. Also if the fence is not an eight foot wooden one where mean theves cant see your baby would never let your baby out with out you. We have had people here in ohio actually break in to steal dogs. |
I love doggie doors in theory, but in practice they usually aren't safe for yorkies bc of predator birds like owls and hawks, which can easily pick up to a 15 pound dog. |
I've seen a few doggie doors around town that lead to an enclosed kennel, (about a 10wx10lx6h chain link structure with a chain link roof). They are usually attached to side walls of a house or garage with a doggie door cut in in wall, not installed in a patio door. I have a friend with one such structure, so that her big dogs have access to go potty outside safely, while she is at work. I'd be worried with a yorkie that someone would cut the chain link and steal the yorkie, as most thieves routinely carry bolt cutters that would make butter of chain link. |
Thank you everyone for your input. Just to be clear, even if I did get one, which I will probably not, I would never let them use it while I was home with them. They are only crated when I'm out since I don't work and never gone for more than a few hours at a time. Thanks again. |
