Quiet puppy= quiet dog? Hi everyone! This is my first ever post! I have a new yorkie puppy! My very first dog! She's 14 weeks old and we've had her 3 weeks. My question is... She's very quiet. She doesn't bark EVER unless she's outside and she sees people/dogs walking by. Inside tho she never ever barks. She won't even bark in her crate to let me know she needs to potty! I have to just take her on schedule and watch her, too. Does this mean she is just a quiet dog? Or is it just her age? |
Not necessarily. Roxy was several months old before she ever barked. Yours figured it out early, but not sure you can depend on any predictions. She's still a baby trying to figure out what being a dog is all about. Roxy has figured out when it's appropriate to bark, and all excessive is barking is discouraged (not allowed). Welcome to YT! Good luck!!! |
ugh, my baby Kimchi was quiet when I first got her, but my other two are barkers at sounds outside and she's now not only got into their habits, but she's become a "talker/chatter" (which oddly my other two aren't chatters) when she wants something (which can be anything at anytime). Had an argument with her a couple of days ago about her going to bed. In the end she wanted on mine for a short bit before wanting to play again >.>; Last night I think I may have found a "trigger" for her to start actually going to bed. Turned out all the lights and the TV and she finally quieted down and went to her sleeping area, lol it might be a fluke, so will try again when she's still buggin me when I'm trying to get ready to sleep (have other household members that leave the TV on in the living room when sleeping, but turn it off later). Otherwise if I position the new bed I got her in/near my room she's more likely to go in it and take a nap/chill out. |
1 Attachment(s) Piper (about 4 yrs) was very quiet and for about the first 2-3mos I had her, she didn't bark--even to go out. However!!! She most certainly has 'found' her voice...When she's determined that I've relaxed enough after work and it's time for our walk, she'll do little grrr-ruffs, turning her head away as doing so--those cute little sounds will soon erupt into non-stop barking combined with the yorkie bounce, culminated with a little Elvis smile/sneer, jumping into my lap and giving a quick smooch a two! These little ones continue to change and evolve daily it seems! Tooo fun!!! |
Thanks everyone! While we are on the barking subject, she growls/barks at people walking by our house when we are outside. Should I discourage this? If so... How? She's very friendly when strangers stop to talk to her but they think she's mean unless I tell them otherwise. She does this with dogs, too. I'm not sure it's appropriate behavior? |

There are many different methods for training to bark/growl when appropriate and when to stay quiet. Socializing is the first step. Some people recommend training to "speak" as a necessary step to learn "quiet." Max often barks when he is excited to see a dog. He doesn't quit until he can get close and greet the dog. Training in this department can be tough with a Yorkie. |

Baxter was a very quiet puppy and is still a quiet dog. He does little "grrrrrufff" barks when he hears the front door and when he wants to play, but that's about it. :D |
Gwenni was very quiet and never would bark until she was probably 6 months old. Even now she is still pretty quiet, unless there is something outside that she wants! Then she's obsessed and won't stop barking! LOL |
We didn't think Ripley knew how to bark when we first got her at 14 weeks. After a month though...she started barking her head off. |
Mine didnt bark untill about 6 mos old then they never shut up enjoy the peace and quiet |
Quiet puppy = Quiet dog I wish! ZoE was a very quiet puppy then somewhere around a year old she saw herself in the glass reflection of my electric fireplace. She went nuts barking at herself, and hasn't stopped since. Enjoy the quiet while you have it! |
