Frightful Incident I came home from work today during lunch time to feed, "relief" and play with my yorkie girl, Aggie. After we were both done, I took out her leash for us to take our daily "brisk-lunch-walk", which she has learned to enjoy over the weeks. Half way through our walk, an elderly lady was walking her dalmation. I hesitated a bit for letting Aggie walk near the dog. Yet, the dog seemed friendly and Aggie seemed to be eager to meet this dog (she was tugging and pulling the leash). The lady and I barely exchanged words when in a split second, the dalmation picked up Aggie in its mouth! Aggie shrieked and yelped. She looked at me for help and I could do was trying to pull the dalmation's collar while its owner spanking and yelling for the dog to put Aggie down. After what seemed like an eternity (2 seconds), the dalmation dropped Aggie on the ground. I picked her up and she was still letting out this terrible, hard-sounding shriek. I held her tight and started our way home while the other lady walked the other direction. Aggie calmed down in my arms while walking home. But I noticed whenever I tried to shift her, she'd cry. After we got home, I sat her down on our couch. She wouldn't put weight on her front left leg. I thought oh no. I immediately drove us to the vet. The vet took an x-ray after feeling her with his hands. Luckily, she didn't have any fractures, just a bruised joint. They fed her some liquid pain killer with anti-immflation. Now she's out in her crate. While I was driving to the vet, there was immense guilt in me. Only if I had picked her up... Or, if I had diverted our paths... I should have listened to my gut feeling... I learned it the hard way and let me little one suffered. New owners, don't be like me. No matter how friendly the big dog seems to be, pick up your yorkies!! |
Don't beat yourself up too bad. Accidents happen. The good thing is that she is going to be fine. Just give her lots of hugs & kisses. |
Oh how terrifying for you! I'm so glad Aggie is ok. Don't beat yourself up too much. We have a lab and I tend to trust big dogs too much. Well, at least now you know not to! I'm just glad it turned out ok and that Aggie will be all right. You poor thing you must have been so scared! |
This is why I am always on the lookout at the dogpark and kind of glad my girls hardly leave my lap....That had to be AWFUL to see and how lucky you were ! I would have FREAKED OUT |
I am so sorry you had such a horrifying experience. Many of us have that same gut feeling that you are talking about. Glad your baby is okay. When she and you feel better I hope she can have a good Big Dog experience so she doesn't freak out every time she sees one. (meaning with a Gentle Giant that is a family friend) Thank you for the reminder. |
:wavey: AWW I would of been terrified ..Makes me have secound thougts about walking Mini in a area where there are lots of dogs .What do you do ..just hold them whenever bigger dogs are near? Take a chance? Sure is scarey , And I am so happy things are okay .Sending Mini Wags and puppy grins to Aggie . :tinyheart :yorkiesar Deb & Mini :aimeeyork |
I am glad your little Aggie was not hurt anymore than she was. Dont feel bad I have let bigger dogs sniff my dogs many times. You feel like that leash they have on is some type of protection form that happening. I will be more careful since hearing your story. |
Wow, I am so glad everything turned out ok. I would have been terrified if something like that happened to Nikko. I also tend to allow Nikko to get near other dogs who are sometimes bigger than him. After what happened to your poor baby I will definitely be A LOT more cautious. |
How scary. Im glad that Aggie wasnt hurt to bad and that she will be ok. Gucci gets scare around big dogs, she will always hide behind me. If i don't know the owner and dog I always carry Gucci and let them pass first. I think is best to safe than sorry. |
Oh my gosh how scary!!! I am so glad that Aggie is going to be okay, I can't imagine how scarey that must have been for you and your baby!!! We have learned to always pick our girls when any dog approaches, not matter the size because you never know the temperment of the other dog(s)....don't beat yourself up it could have happened to anyone!! |
WOW how scary for you!!! I am glad Aggie is ok! Dont beat yourself up. It sounds like she is going to be fine and your post has made us all more aware of how careful we should be! So for that...THANK YOU!!! |
I don't always pick mine up if there is room to keep a tight leash and go way around and the other owner is doing the same. I will not hesitate to pick them up though if the big dog can come close enough to possible harm them. I have been known to pick my yorkie up with the harness when a big dog appears out of no where. I was traumatized when I was 12 years od and was walking my toy poodle and a boxer attacked him. It was horrifying I go bit and my dog did not survive. I am so glad that Aggie will be okay. We can never be too careful with these babies. You are a wonderful mommy....it's the lady with the dalmation that needs to work with her dog. |
That so scary! I have had several incidents in my neighborhood one with Gracie my previous Yorkie and one with Maya my pom who isn't that small. Now if I even see another dog anywhere close by I pick up my dog. I haven't really walked Cali and won't until Spring but it is terrifying. I'm glad nothing was broken. |
Oh My! I'm so glad everything turned out o.k. Zoe and Lizzy send kisses your way...hopefully Aggie won't be to sore to play tomorrow. |
don't be so hard on yourself, you had no idea what would happen. That woman should have warned you or had a better hold on her dog, up by the collar until you had passed. hugs and kisses to Aggie. |
