Question about coats and colouring 1 Attachment(s) Hey all, So Penny is almost 7months old now, her colouring is coming through nicely I think. She has a beautiful face now and some lovely silver on her head. Her body and tail are still all black. Is it likely she'll stay black or do you think she still has a lot of changing to do yet? Also, she is my first yorkie, I'm embarrassed to say that I don't understand what a cotton coat or silky coat is. I hear it mentioned a lot. Is 1 better than the other? Is 1 more common? Do I need to take special care? Anyway I've attached a picture of my girl! I think she is just GORGEOUS. 7 months old on the 29th and 5lbs5 :) love her! Thanks I'm advance, Danni X |
LOL, I love those ears! It's difficult to tell from a picture, but she looks like a silk coat to me, which is the proper coat for a Yorkie. I have one with a cotton coat and another with a silk coat. I can tell you it is MUCH easier to care for a silk coat, for both the dog and you. A cotton coat tends to mat, so I keep the cotton coated one with a shorter cut. Your pup is still young and the coat is not through changing. |

Cotton coat is basically fluffier than silky, thus making them look bigger than they are. Though silky coat is preferred, I hear they are slower to grow and may be thinner in density. But certainly less tangly. Most pups are pretty much cottony and you won't be able to know for sure till the coat fully matures which can be about 1-2 years, give or take. I've had a blue/gold and a black/tan growing up and I currently have a black/gold (so far she's going that route, the other two we had were registered on opposite colorings but turned out otherwise, lol) She looks like a black/gold, but that's only comparing to my girl now and that could easily change as well :3 |
dog Your little Yorkie is beautiful! It is amazing how one little dog can have such stunning color in their coat and all blend in perfectly! I bet she is a little love and a great companion and friend. She is going to bring you many happy days! |
I have to agree with you. She is gorgeous. |
I wouldn't want to hazard a guess on coat texture but her ears and face are adorable! |
Thank you all very much for your help and comments about my little girl. She's a monkey that's for sure but she makes us so much happier than we could have ever imagined. Her ears are just hilarious they're huge! From the descriptions I can imagine silky which I guess is a good thing. I met her mummy and she was very silky like tgat too so hopefully it'll stay like that now. Xx |
From my understanding, if they get a whitish head, they are more likely to have a silky coat. Another indication is something called eye shine, take a picture with a flash and look at the shine of the eyes, if it's green, it's a silky coat, if it's golden, it's a cotton coat. Most puppies will have blue eyes though. I'm kind of amazed her ears are standing, most breeders recommend trimming the hair around the top of the ear so that the ears will be upright, she must have some strong cartilage in her ears. If they start drooping, when she's teething, you might want to trim up the hair a little. As she gets older it won't matter though. She's a cutie pie, that's for sure. Silky is a good thing, much easier to care for. |

She's actually 7months old so spayed and no puppy teeth left :) her ears stood at 10 and a half weeks old and just grew and grew. The hair crept growing too and I just think her fluffy long ears are adorable. Thanks for your help and kind comments X |
Geez, I loooove those ears! |
Wow, she's a beauty! Her ears and face are just darling. |
Oh I just love those ears! Sorry I'm not much help, but I couldn't resist commenting on how precious she is! |
