So Overwhelmed I have to admit I am very overwhelmed with my new dog. I have had two german sheppards in my life and they where not as destructive as my 6 pound yorkie!! I never knew how devilish they are!! I have to watch him 24/7 which is impossible. Last night he was chewing something hard and I figured out it was the grout from my kitchen floor!! Then within seconds it was onto a rock from outside and then the bunny poop! It is non stop. One thing after another. I have tons of chew toys and regular toys on the floor all over the house. I am telling you he is more work then my daughter ever was!! Please tell me that they slow down as they age. He is only 8 months old |
You have to remember he is a puppy . . I have an iris ex pen to put Galen in when I can not watch him. I sweep and check the floors before he goes around the house. I have cats so they get into stuff. I also check the ground outside making sure no mushrooms or poop. I personally thing because they are closer to the ground they find more stuff lol. . . Galen is going to be 2 in Nov. He is still going. But they do slow down when they are older. Good luck |
I too would recommend an IRIS pen or to confine him a little when he is more on his own, to keep him safe, and you sane lol :D. Instead of chew toys, have you tried actual chews - like Munchy Stix or something? Something that has taste and can keep him busy? What about a Kong? |
Oh yes a kong ! . . . You can put some peanut butter. Or plain pumpkin or even mix the two together or 1/2 plain yogurt and 1/2 plain yogurt. I have two. I stick them in the freezer. It lasts a little longer frozen. They love it |
How old is your new guy? |
lol, sorry to laugh, I was remembering my puppy days, my lil furbutts were so mischievous, no matter how many toys they had, or how much time I spent playing with them, they had to be watched like a hawk. If I couldn't see them that meant they were into mischief lol. My one puppy chewed 5 pairs of slippers lol, I had sliding doors on my bedroom closet where my slippers were kept, and the doors were fully closed. She found if she tap, tap, tap on the doors they would slightly open, then she could stick her muzzle into the crack and open the door to get to the prize behind the door lol, smart cute lil rascal that she was. All 4 of my pups all now past were always into mischief even up to 11 y/o, but I loved it all. You have to baby proof your house. The suggested ex-pen sounds ideal. Ya gotta love these lil yorkies. |
Hang in there! It gets better with each month and year. Max had me in tears several times when he was a pup. I didn't know how people kept these little guys alive. I agree with everyone above that an xpen when you can't supervise is helpful indoors. Outdoors, you have to be vigilant. Max and Teddy are now 5 and 6 and usually leave bad things outdoors alone, but I still have to keep an eye on them. |
I have done the Kong and chewhides but he still wants everything he is not suppose to have. He just walks around constantly looking for stuff to get into!! You would swear he was on caffeine!! I think he drinks coffee when I am not home!! |
I heartily support the xpen concept! P-Nut is 3 and Pickles is 2 - we pen them whenever they're not going to be supervised for a substantial length of time. Pickles is pretty good, but P-Nut does love to get into things. They do slow down eventually; P-Nut as a pup was like having an infant that very rarely slept or rested. I had no idea it was going to be like that! I taught the "leave it" and "drop it" commands which have proved to be invaluable, by the way. |
The thing is when we are not home he is a saint. He does not touch a thing. But when I come into the picture than watch out!! I would hate to have to put him in a pen when I am home with him. I understand he is just a puppy but come on can he sleep at least for a few hours to give me a break!! LOL |
Do you take him for walks? Ali goes for a 2 or 3 mile walk every morning. Sometimes it's a 2 or 3 mile battle to keep her from tasting everything on the ground but it's getting better. |
1 Attachment(s) Yup I take him to the park every night. |
Sounds like you need and exercise pen. |

Well Dutch is about 2 and half yrs old. I've only had her 5 months and I don't think I have ever seen her sleep. She gets an average of 3 walks a day for a least a 3 miles a day, and about an hour of playtime. She still manages to get into everything. I love it because she is so full of youthful exuberance and she makes smile so much just watching her. She even barks at inanimate objects which is completely hilarious. I know she will eventually slow down so I am actually enjoying it for now. I do put her in an expen just to get some peace but she is slowly learning my schedule and is gradually adjusting her playfulness around me. |
Mina is 3yrs,quite the princess, she doesn't really chew on much. Kenzie is almost 18mos and chews only on her antlers and her sisters. Then there is Tilly 9mos. In the past 3 mos she has destroyed part of a wall,a pair of reading glasses, most of the toys in the house and she weighs in at a whopping 5lbs. I would feel bad except I have seen pictures of the damage that one of her litter mates has done. If she is laying anywhere and I ask her what she is doing, she hides her face, even if she is chewing on something that is ok. Which most of the time it isn't. This winter should be fun with firewood coming in the house..... Sigh. |

That's what I was going to say. The little "grout eater" needs supervision when you're home, and then a good work out too. Good luck! |
Having a Yorkie puppy is like having a very active toddler. I had no idea what I would be in for. Lol! That being said, I wouldn't change a thing. Calleigh finally mellowed out some when she was a little over a year. Hang in there! :) |
I'm in the same place you are, OP. My new puppy is 3 months old and such a handful. I don't remember my first, Diva, being so rambunctious. Diva turns 6 tomorrow and she's super mellow. Ruby, on the other hand, is like off the chart hyper. It's as though she's had a triple shot of espresso. And man, is she fast! She takes off with things she knows she shouldn't have and ignores me. When I find a way to lure her to me then she lays on her belly and stretches her legs out and gives me the innocent face. LOL. I can't get anything done unless she's in her crate and when she can see me, she's whining and barking to get out. I just invested in a puppy apartment so now I can get some sleep at night. Wanting to take a nap at work was hurting my productivity. Hopefully soon she'll settle down so I can be more productive at home too. |

I hate when they give the innocent face. I have never been able to resist that innocent face even when you know they are guilty as hell. |
I didn't read all the posts, but it sounds like you have your hands as full as mine. I have an Xpen and I still spend most of my time home chasing a furry butt around saying "drop it" like an idiot because he doesn't listen. At any rate, things have calmed down since I discovered a weapon. :-D. There is this tiny mom and pop dog feed store / dog wash here in town. They sell duck feet for a buck each. Oh my gosh, my saving grace. I hide them around the kitchen and now living room since we learned to hike stairs. Keeps him entertained till its gone or the cat entices him into a game of chase- me- till- I- jump- up- on- the- window- where- you- can't- catch- me. He thinks he isn't allowed to have it so he hides it from me in his bed. Funny and cute, till I got thinking what else is he hiding in there..... |
I was once told my yorkie acted and looked like a mop on crack!!! :( |
LOL. At some point, I think Ruby will think her real name is "Ruby NO!!". LOL |
