question about my new puppy Hi everyone! My husband and I just bought our puppy this weekend. We bought from a particular breeder because they specialize in "teacups". The breeder said she would be in the 2.5-3 pound range. Her dad was 2.5 and her mom was 3. I took her to the vet today for her checkup and the scale read 1.14, I am assuming that means she is 18.24 ounces. First, is my conversion correct? So, the vet said, "Wow this is going to be a big yorkie!" So I am confused! I looked at a weight prediction chart and it says she should be around 3 pounds. The vet was telling me she was going to be 6 or 7 pounds. I don't know who to believe, the breeder or the vet! Please give me some insight and any info you have. Thanks so much! Amy |
First of all you need to find a new vet bc a 6 or 7 lb yorkie is standard and there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. I cant believe that the breeder that you got your pup from even bred her little girl at 3lbs that is very risky and cruel you will get alot of opionions on here so be ready bc here they come!!!! |

Determining weight of a pup, when grown is very hard to predict,, Bailey's mom was 6 pounds, his dad was 5-6 pounds,,and he is 12..so go figure, Ya just don't know,, genes go way back. :rolleyes: |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. You will find a lot of information here on how to give some great care for your little one. What is her name? As you read, there is no such thing as a "teacup", many times it is only a term used by some breeders to charge more for their Yorkies or refer to them as being extreamly tiny. How old is your little girl? She is pretty small right now so it's important to keep her healthy. It's important she eats/drinks and not have any episodes of hypoglycemia. Also, she needs to stay warm, not be overly stressed/exersized, and needs plenty of naps. Regarding her size, there is no guarantee. A 6-7 lb Yorkie is NOT huge by any means, it's within the standard and that's wonderful. I hope you enjoy Yorkie Talk as much as we all do here!! :aimeeyork |

Congrats Welcome to YT and congrats on the baby...I wouldnt be as concerned about how much she is going to weight as long as she healthy. It seems like the smaller yorkies have a harder time staying healthy so if she does turn out to be standard size 5-7lbs you should be happy as this is still a great size. My Mason weights about 6lbs and he is not big at all he is the perfect size and very healthy. |
I just wanted to say :wavey: & welcome! I took my baby to the vet for a check up yesterday and she weighs 1.5lbs! I thought that was too small but everyone has told me that she is healthy! That is all I am worried about! :p Can't wait to see pics of your baby! |

If the scale said 1.14 then the conversion you did was correct. 18.24 ounces of weight. The general yorkie rule is to triple the 8 week weight and you said your new baby is 9 weeks. 18.24 * 3 / 16 = 3.42 pounds at maturity give or take a little bit, therefore 3 pounds 6.72 ounces. Carter is 3.6# full grown and he is quite small. What usually makes a yorkie appear larger or smaller is their body composition . . . short square body or long legs and long body. While Cooper is 3.5#, he is longer legged but shorter bodied than Carter and looks smaller. You can never tell! Weight isn't all that important . . . I hope you end up with the "look" that you like more than the perfect weight. |
I would defintely consider a new vet....you are defintely not going to have a "big" yorkie. 1.14 oz for 9 weeks is perfectly fine, my two girls were 1. 7lbs at 8 weeks and the now weigh 5lbs and 7lbs. You never really know how big they will get but she will defintely not get really big!! You need to make sure she is eating and drinking to keep her blood sugar up, since she is so small. I love her name....Lola!! We would love to see some pictures of her!! |
Welcome! When I got cali at 9 weeks she weighed 1 lb. Now at 29 weeks she weighs 3 lbs 11 ounces which is to me too small. She is very fined boned and I worry about her alot. I am trying to get her weight to at least 4 lbs hopefully 4 1/2. But anytime I took her to the vet they weighed her and if it showed 1.11 that meant she was 1 pound and 11 ounces. Also, based on Cali's 9 week weight she would have been in teh 2.5 to 3 lb range but she has already surpassed that. I can't wait to see pictures of her. |
