housebreaking I was reading the goods and bads about your yorkie. It seemed that every thread had said they are not housebreaking. My baby is 11 wks. so i dont expect her to be but am i ever going to be able to just let her run like my russell and dobe. And will she start telling me later when she has to go out. I was thinking about a bell at the door she can ring. I dont know, I guess im just getting nervous im gonna end up with a kennel/house. Patty  |
They do learn, it just takes time. If we are in the back room Princess will run to the door and bark for us to open it for her. We have a doggie door for her in the front room. It took her a year to go out when she needed to, but she's got it down now. :D Now I clean our carpets every other month, instead of every week. :) |
I can tell you that my baby is 8 1/2 months old and she is 100% potty trained. She has been really well trained, using her doggie door for about 2 1/2 months now. I would say that I started getting comfortable giving her the run of the house about 6 1/2 months old. I can tell you this, though: It took 2 - 3 months of nothing but diligent work, keeping an eye on her, out to potty every hour on the hour, keeping her in confined areas of the house, no wandering without strict supervision. I thought it was going to kill me! (oh by the way, I work). It was like having a second job! But I can tell you, it worked! So if you are willing to put in the hours and the work, then you can have a fully housebroken yorkie. I also think that it helps to make them go outside. I am not sure how house broken you can get a yorkie that uses peepads or papers. |
I know it is hard not to get frustrated, but your baby will eventually be housetrained. By the time Bruiser was about 4 months old he was house trained. I had to leave him at my moms while I went on my honeymoon and my mom has a Sheltie and doggie door, by the time I came home, Bruiser was trained. It is good to have another dog set an example. Your baby will get there, it just takes time. |
You know I am wondering the exact same thing. My Yorkie is 4 1/2 months old and NO where near being house trained. I do have a Aussie at home who if fully 100% house trained and it hasn't helped me in teaching the baby. I feel like I am about to lose my mind. I sure hope it ends soon because my hubby is losing his patience. Good luck with it. I wish I could give you positive feedback but I myself am waiting for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. |
Lady turned 2 years old in november and we have done everything possible to train her but its totally impossible:( She was great at first, but then we got Jess and suddenly she stopped using her pads and decided that the best place to pee and poop was anywhere and everywhere. Nothing has worked and we have done EVERYTHING,we have read books, spoke to different vets AND Iv spoken to a spanish doggy shrink online, but nothing, absolutely nothing works. Right now we take her to the bathroom every few hours and we shut her in there with a clean pad,we check her every couple of minutes and when we can see that she has done peepee or has pooped,we let her out.Its the only thing that stops her using the whole house as her toilet. The only problem with this method is that she is sometimes in the bathroom for up to 2 hours because IF we let her out before she has peed, she will do it on the floor in the living room:( My other yorkie on the other hand is wonderful, she started using the pads from day one and she doesnt go anywhere else.Jess was VERY easy to train, she picked it up in less than a month:) |
Joey was fully housebroken by 4 1/2 months, including ringing a bell to go outside. I can't help but notice that those of us who have said our dogs are housebroken are all talking about going outside. Gina has said that she's having trouble with pee pad training. I'm wonder hzlis if you are trying to pee pad train, too? Like ladylavender said, I've read that it's harder to train a dog to use pee pads because you are basically teaching him that it's okay to potty in the house. Perhaps there is some truth to that? Hmmm... I feel another poll coming on... |
