With A Little Help From My (YorkieTalk) Friends. Sooo.... I recently found me a black yorkie/maltese mix(Craigslist). She is 7 months old and absolutely adorable. She really is! It was a family going through a divorce that wanted and needed something more for the precious pup. She is not spayed but will be soon. I need some help! She chews on EVERYTHING. All my kids' toys, EVERYTHING. She shreds all my other yorkie's toys that he has had a couple years. I am hoping she will grow out of it. I know she is teething....I found a puppy tooth!! :) How can I help her with this teething process? I didn't get my other yorkie until he was 2(again, craigslist) so I didn't have to worry about that. Also, when should I get her spayed? I am not sure when she should have the operation done? I have no idea if she has had her first heat or not. I didn't think to ask her previous owner. I have noticed a few times that she is on my male yorkie doing the "hump" thing but they were playing so I'm not sure exactly. He is fixed so there are no worries there. :) One last one, she was free fed for the most part. She always had food in her bowl when she wasn't locked in her TINY cage while her owners worked. She was on a decent food but I feed Wellness and plan on doing that with her. I have had great luck with the brand! I will slowly change her from the previous food, but I cannot free feed as my other yorkie will eat hers up. I feed him twice a day but he'll attempt to grab anything and everything. Haha! She is 4 pounds at 7 1/2 months old. What would you recommend feeding her. I plan to keep her on puppy food until at least a year old. I can feed her 2-3 times a day but not sure on how much each feeding. What are all of you feeding? Thanks for taking your time to read this! God bless! |

CONGRATS on your new kiddo - she sounds adorable! I would get her plenty of chew toys and chew bones and perhaps a Kong - and redirect her any time she chews on anything else. You may have to limit her access to the house though until she gets through the teething. Spaying is recommended, generally, before the first heat. I did Pfeiffer's at 8 mths old...a little later than most. Also, you'd want to have the vet remove any retained baby teeth when under for the spay -- and get her microchipped at that time too. As far as feeding, 2-3x a day is perfect and that's a nice food you're using. As far as how much to feed - you may find this calculator helpful: Dogs feeding chart - Nature's Logic |
Use Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray for the things you DONT want her to chew on, and redirect with a chew toy for her to gnaw on instead. |
1 Attachment(s) Freeze a little water in the bottom of a bowl and encourage your little one to play with it; hopefully she'll chew on this as she'd doing with everything else (lordy, it's like all you're doing is trying to keep track of and take stuff she shouldn't have, right?!!!). Anyway, the ice will feel good on her little chompers and may actually numb the discomfort for a bit. |
I got my baby a puppy ice ring (the kind you just refreeze) and she loves it while it's nice and cold :D |
