Questions about losing baby teeth?
 
I see a lot of people posting about their yorkies losing their baby teeth. I am a total newbie and had no idea this happened. I guess it makes sense. I had a yorkie for six years and never noticed her losing any teeth. Another poster had mentioned the vet saying her dog had lost all their baby teeth so that was one less thing to worry about and in that post they talked about losing the atrocious bad breath almost overnight. My daughter has a yorkie with the worse breath imaginable. I wonder if it has something to do with baby teeth? What can you tell me about this?

If there a puppy bad breath could be from teething but if there adult they probably need a dental. A lot of yorkies do not lose all the baby teeth and the adult ones will push in to and then make double teeth. If this isn't taken care of it can mess up the alignment of there teeth and or cause food to get stuck between them and cause decay. Most people have the baby teeth left over removed when they get there puppy spayed or neutered.

Bad breath should get a dental check by a vet, you said the yorkie is six? I'm afraid these little guys have a tendency to dental issues and often need tooth removal or they can develop or (particularly if there is a smell) may already have an infection. It can take you by surprise but often bad breath is one of the first indicators.

Thank you so much for this information. I am going to strongly suggest my daughter take her dog (3 years old) in for a dental check up.

Many smalls dogs have a problem with loosing their baby teeth. Retained puppy teeth can cause problems if not removed. Bad breath and in the event that something abscesses then that can cause an infection and get into the blood stream. Just as with people dental health is imperative and yorkies are prone to having dental issues. Often times it's recommended that you brush your yorkies teeth to prevent build up and limit the amount of times they have to go under anesthesia for a dental cleaning.
