New Yorkie Momma here! Help Good morning! My name is Laura and we just got a Yorkie two days ago! Her name is Reese (aka Reese's, Reesie)! We absolutely adore her! Just a few hiccups here and there. Mainly FOOD! She didn't eat all last night and had a vet visit yesterday. They gave her centinel and dewormer. Could her appetite be worse because of the meds? I noticed even prior to that she stopped eating her kibble holistic Health Extension. She would only lick the wet food off of it that I was mixing with it. Now for the last 12 or more hours she is not even wanting the wet food. What do I do and what food should I try her on first. I have a petco near me and I have seen/done a little research on brands but there are so many opinions! Her vet suggested Eukanuba or Iams and I haven't seen that on any "good puppy food lists". Please advise!!! Pic coming soon |
Welcome to our community of Yorkie Lovers! I don't have any answer to your question and hopefully someone will be able to help you out. |
No help either, just wanting to welcome you to YT. Good luck on finding the proper food, others will be along to give suggestions, advice and tips. |
First off welcome to yt. I feed my puppy royal canin. When my puppy wouldn't eat I feed him out of my hand for some reason he would eat it like that but not from his bowl. I dunno worth a try. |
We have Winnie on hills ideal balance. She gets probiotic powder every day. She seems to like it. Most pet stores allow a certain time period if you buy the food and doggie doesn't like it you can bring it back. Whatever food u decide be sure to do a slow transition so she doesn't get tummy upset. But you do need to get something in her any way you can....12 hours is a long time for her not to have eaten. Did she get any vaccines? It Could possibly be the sentinel and or dewormer that has her feeling blah....but honestly if she isn't eating whatever you can entice her to eat is better than nothing. |
Just another suggestion....maybe try hills i/d ... it's a canned bland food. Winnie was just on this and she absolutely tore it up! It's not really intended for long term unless warranted. But it may be a start to stimulate her appetite. I'm not sure if pet stores carry that....but u could call your vet and see if you can pick up a can. Or if your vet doesn't have it call around to local vets. It shouldn't be a problem to get a can from a vet that isn't your own. |
Blue grain free So I was already at the pet store and prior to that had read many wonderful reviews on Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo. While at the pet store she indicated that Royal Canin wasn't natural so if that's the route I wanted to take she suggested Blue Buffalo. They have a puppy and small breed line and that's what I got! Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain Free. I didn't mix her food when I came home just because I was very worried with how little she was eating. I went ahead and just gave her the Blue Buffalo wet mixed with kibble and she ate more than I have seen her eat since I got her! I am sure we will have tummy adjustments for a few days and I am ok with that as long as her appetite improves. Thank you all for the tips!!! Any recs on puppy treats for potty training? She has been doing excellent in this area by the way! She is such a good puppy so far :) |
profile pic? How do I post a profile pic of my lil girl? |

It's great to hear that she's finally eating. Way to go Reese! & Welcome to YT! :) |
Thank you! |
Meet Reesie... 1 Attachment(s) She's tired from homework! |
My pup once had the same problem. The vet told me no snack just dog food. Said a dog want starve themselves (unless he's sick)and when they realize that's ALL their getting, they will eat. Both my pups Yorkie & Maltese loves RC. My maltese I had to keep trying till I found what he liked. He didn't like any of the expensive foods. My vet told me to try Iams, I did and he loved it. But when I got my Yorkie he started eating her RC so I just buy that for the both of them. |
awwwww...my Winnie sleeps like that too!! She's adorable!! Love that soft looking puppy hair!!! |
Laura, Reesie is just adorable! :) |
She is absolutely gorgeous. No food suggestions as I don't get my baby girl until Friday. My breeder recommended Royal Canin small breed so that is what I purchased. We shall see. Your baby girl is adorable. |
Your little furbaby is adorable!:) |
Welcome, Im glad that your baby is eating. However, a change in food without it being done slowly can lead to tummy upset. If she starts to have diarea or throwing up please take her to the vet. A young pup can dehydrate very quickly and these symptoms do not always go away by themselves. I share this with you not to cause fear, but to make sure that you are informed. The symptoms can show up in 2 or 3 days. If she begins to not feel well, it is very important that she be kept hydrated and some food in her, even if it is just boiled chicken. Little ones can have a sudden drop in blood sugar and that is very serious. I truly hope that the change in diet will not effect her at all. |
Reesie update She's doing wonderful! No diarrhea and she LOVES the new food! She already likes her kennel at night and is learning to use the puppy pad at night (I just leave her kennel cracked incase she has to potty or wants a little snack). Thank you all for the advice and sweet comments. Her personality is starting to show and she's a bit spunky and princessy if thats even a thing dogs do. Lol Lately when we go outside to potty she'd rather potty on concrete than grass...I guess so her feet dont get wet hahaha I'll have to break her of that. Even princesses can get a little dirty! |
So glad that she is doing well!! Yes, yorkie little girls can be very "princess". I have 2 and a Biewer and they are all very girlie. |
Your baby is just adorable, the yorkie breed is a spunky breed and filed with high energy. They will TRY to the the boss, most times they win, ya just cannot resist their face and the eyes. Enjoy that lil puppy. |
she is so sweet! Enjoy your new fur baby! Maggie does the same thing - she prefers to go potty on the concrete patio...when I first got her I was just happy she was going outside, but now i am working on getting her on the grass. She slowly starting to pee on the grass but still poos on the concrete - progress! lol |
