portosystemic shunt hi my 6 month old yorkie sophie is being worked up for 2 seizures that she has had in the past 2 weeks. The vet strongly believes she has portosystemic shunt due to her test results. he wants to put her on medication and change her food to a low protein diet. Wondering if anyone has dealt with this condition and if anyone can recommend a good dog food for this issue. thanks. |
Sorry to hear about Sophie, but it's a good thing she has you to help her through this. I haven't been through this with one of mine, but several here have and hopefully they will chime in soon with some advice. Typically they are put on a prescription food that you will get from the vet, but home cooking is possible IF you get a consult with a vet nutritionist to get a properly balanced recipe that takes her special needs into account. Did your vet mention any more tests? If it truly is portosystemic shunt, your Sophie will need surgery and they typically do very well after that. If it isn't one big shunt but many microscopic ones (MVD), that can't be fixed with surgery but they generally do well as long as they are on a special diet and take supplements. |
One more thing .... you need to talk to her breeder about all of this. These are problems caused by genetics and the breeding pair should never be used again. If they are a good breeder, they will want to know and will also be there for you financially for issues like this. |
I'm so sorry your Sophie is going through this. I have no personal experience with it , but know that many here do. Hang in there & I'm sure you will get great advice. |
her breeder is a lost cause i don't even consider her a breeder. I really think she runs some sort of puppy mill. I received her from a person in sandyhook ct who claims she has breed yorkies for over 30 years but after i did some research on her i really believe she is just a scammer. I have seen nothing but complaints about her online and i have tried to contact her numerous times when i first got sophie and she has not once returned any of my calls. she is the lowest of the low in my book. |
I understand what you are saying about the breeder. There are many of us here (myself included) that got an unhealthy pup from an unethical breeder. I just had to mention involving the breeder if there was even the smallest chance that they might be one of the ones that would step up to the plate and do the right thing for Sophie and you. |
I wish that were the case and she would have stepped up to the plate but she hasn't even called to check on her. Sophie will be seeing a specialist to confirm what her vet thinks she has and we will go from there. She is such a good girl and so sweet. I just pray that everything works out and we can get her better :( |
Sorry to hear your lil Sophie is so ill. Please keep us updated. |
So sorry to hear about Sophie. Praying that everything goes well for her. Please keep us updated. So hard when we buy puppies we never know what they are going to have for health issues. |
