Wash him with a good shampoo and conditioner, dry him throughly. When you sit down to comb him out, take a pinch of corn starch and rub it into the knot, take your metal comb and gently work out the knot. You may need to add a little more corn starch as you work the knot out. Try to hold the hair between the knot and his skin so that it doesn't pull on his skin. When you've got it worked out, then give him a small treat, rub the area gently with your fingers and praise him a lot. Repeat on the next knot. When you see that he's nearly at his tolerance stop and go do something with him that he loves. You can continue later when he's rested up. Keep in mind this activity can really, really stress these guys out. With time and patience, he'll get better at being able to tolerate the grooming session.
If he's knotted really bad, it may just be the best thing to have him shaved down and start anew. Good luck. :) |
