pupply Cages Hi,I own 2 yorkies and 1 yorkie-poo I have to kennel them more than 6 hrs sometimes due to my hetic work schedule. With them being in their cage that long, I do expect them to go to the bathroom time to time. Right now, I removed there bed and laid down newspaper. I'm trying to build or invest in a new type of kennel that is more like a puppy kennel where the paper is below like on the link below. MidWest Puppy Playpen w/1" Grid - Statelinetack.com I really feel if I was to purchase the materials and find a bulider it would be cheaper. Has anyone experince this type of issue or have any suggestions for a solution? |
I commend you for trying to find a better way that works for your kiddos, that's wonderful. What about this pen? This is what I used when mine were puppies and it nicely fits bedding, food, water, couple toys, and a pee pad. Would this work? It's only $42 too. Also, btw, I think they do make a larger one too. |
dog I use the dog fences and it gives them plenty room to roam. Just fence off the kitchen area or an area where they can walk around. It is not good to be in a little cage all day long. I would not like that. There is a plastic type fence that you can put in a circle and put them in the middle of it. Plenty of room and they cannot jump out. My house is for the dogs. You can tell because I have dog fences. I have tile in the kitchen and that is where they go. Also tile in the family room. It is comfy and they have room. |

Having them walk on metal grids is absolutely terrible for there paws and very painful. Are they trained to use potty pads? Why not shut them in a room rather then a crate? Newspaper ink is toxic to dogs. If they just go potty every where like in there crates with out there being a designated potty spot they will never be potty trained. |
I like Sandy's idea best but if you really want to crate them, how about a large playpen connect the entrance to a small crate where they can potty. Sort of like that "puppy apartment" idea. |
Oh my goodness, I cannot imagine Harry - or any dog that I have ever owned - being caged in that way for hours on end, a bit like 'battery chickens'?!!!? I too would dedicate a room for them....dog-proof it and cosy it all up....otherwise what's the point in having them? I truly hope you find a solution for you and your little bubs. |
That cage looks terribly uncomfortable! Metal also gets cold, which is something to also take into consideration. |

I think a metal exercise pen is your best solution like others have mentioned. The cage you are considering is horrible for the dogs and horrible for you to clean and disinfect. That's what puppy mills use. My dogs never lay on the bare floor let alone a wire grate. They like to lay on something clean and plush. How do the three get along together? What do you plan to do for the one in whelp when it's time for her to have her puppies and until they are weaned. She may not want the other two around. Please really rethink this situation. |
You can connect 2 ex-pens together & make a large space for them to stay safely in. One side toward the back (not in the front bc they're going to step all over it when you come home), place their pee pads. The other side, their bed & one side, their water dishes. I've read some people line the bottom w/linoleum for easy cleaning, esp if it's placed over carpet. I have never had to cage more than one pup at a time but if I had to I really love Jenny's idea of the tow together to form one larger cage. You can even add a box type loft of sorts for them to hop up onto to get out of one another's way and also have a place to go potty. |
