Preparing Piper but When to Wear? 1 Attachment(s) Anticipating cold morning walks, I picked up a t-shirt for Piper. But it occurs to me that I don't know if/when she'll need a little extra something for warmth...How does one tell if their yorkie is uncomfortably cold? Even now sometimes the tips of her cutest-ever little ears feel cold; I see little winter hats. Does she need one of those? I try to let Piper set the pace on our neighborhood walks and we move at a pretty good clip for 1/2 hr to hour. So happy I discovered this amazing site and with it, what I consider to be compassionate and understanding new friends and mentors. |
I'm so glad you did find YT and thank you for your wonderful comment regarding the members here :). None of mine wear clothes...but I tried w/ our girl, Pfeiffer :p...she wasn't having it. One way to tell if they're cold is some yorkies will actually shiver when cold, so then you'd know your kiddo may need a little sweater or something. The picture of your kiddo is darling, btw :)! |
When we do get a bit of "cold" weather my two curl up tight and try not to step on the cold tile. I put a shirt on them and they snuggle into it. If it warms up during the day they let me take it off. I do have little fleece wrap jackets that we use for walks on the coldest of days in Jan/ Feb. |
I don't know what temp to tell you but I usually figure that if I'm chilly so are they. They have light sweaters, fleeces and heavy jackets for the winter. At night they usually scratch at the covers so I lift them and let them under. Ps your little one is adorable-welcome! |
Teddy shivers and hunches his rear end when he is cold. Max almost never gets cold outside, even in the middle of winter. I still put sweaters and coats on him. When temperatures drop under 40 degrees, we usually keep our outings short, 20 - 30 minutes. Hats can be helpful. I have used our Kiss-E soft collars as ear and head warmers on the coldest of days. |
I think it kinda depends on your dog. Like Callie gets cold pretty easily but my moms yorkie Sammy does not so like when she needs a sweater he might only need a tshirt. I think they probably show different signs of being cold too like Callie will shut down when she is cold and Sammy will curl in a ball. A lot of people go by the if you are cold so are they theory but I'm always hot lol so I have picked up on Callie's little signs that she is cold. |
I cant help you on this one... Guinness would wear clothes and cook instead of letting me take them off and Stella would freeze to death before she wore clothes. |
Anything under 50 degrees - if we are to be out and about more than a few minutes - I have a sweater jacket - then a full winter coat for real winter weather. I also have an all weather rain resistant coat. It is good for the shoulder seasons. |
I am so completely enamored of the yorkie breed and their people. I've never met such a kind, warm, funny, loving, compassionate and truly caring group. You've boosted my confidence as a "new" yorkie person. My Piper makes me laugh out loud every day--in ways only those who dwell w/these adorable ones can truly "get!" Thank you sooo very much always... |
It depends on the dog. Joel dives in the snow "naked" and never shivers or cares. He just doesn't get cold, but winter is my excuse to put coats on him:p |

OH and since you are a new yorkie mom we MUST warn you.... Yorkies can give one heck of a stink eye if you do something they do not approve of!!! Consider yourself warned because if dirty looks could kill this breed would rule the world :p |
Mine usually dont wear clothes |
I dress ZoE as I dress. If it a chilly Autumn evening and I need a hoodie, she wears one too. If it's cold enough out that I require a winter coat, i put ZoE's coat on her. She's not a fan of clothing and isn't thrilled if I put a dress on her just to be cute. But she seems to not mind wearing a hoodie or a coat when it's cold out, but she wants it off as soon as we get inside. |
