Food -what is the best for them?
 
Hi

I have a yorkie that is now 6 months old. When I first got him, he would eat both his wet and dry food that was very convenient as I didn't have to think about his food everyday.

However, he now refuses to eat his dry food and he will only eat what we are eating. Therefore, I have started cooking for him specifically (chicken or pork on the grill with boiled rice or past and without salt) as I want to avoid giving him food with spices or salt.

I don't mind cooking for him; however, does anyone know if this is ok for their health? Any suggestions?

Just meat and rice alone is not a balanced diet, and is lacking nutrients. While a bland chicken and rice type diet is find for a few days, when a pup has an illness/stomach upset, it is not nutritionally sound for long term use.

Consult a veterinary nutritionist to get balanced recipes. There are also products like Balance It that provides recipes with their nutritional powder.

I look forward to the answers! I think it will boil down to a balance of nutrition requirement for proper health. I went to a dog food forum for all the answers that I need.

Dogs do need a balanced diet, most especially young dogs/puppies like yours..it can actually be very dangerous to their health as puppies if they don't get the needed nutrients as they're still developing...this could cause major problems down the line with their health.

Homecooking is great, but it must be balanced - the easiest way to do this is to go to www.balanceit.com and get the info/recipes balanced properly from that site. You will need to add supplements when homecooking btw.

Just had a thought.... Have you tried one of the better dog foods, dry kibble, that might have a more appealing smell/flavor for your pup? Orijen and Acana(same Canadian company) come to mind. Recently, I've looked into Farmina as well, pretty new to the states, Itallian co... conflicting info on what is actually available at Farmina for here in the states but I think I've got it figured out.

Since you asked for suggestions, cut your pup off of the people food and pork/chicken/rice. Get him back on a quality well balanced puppy food in the proportion the manufacturer recommends. It's the best thing for his health near and long term!

If you want to home cook you need to have a recipe balanced by a vet nutritionist and you have to have a supplement like balance it or you are doing more harm to you dog then good. You can check out balanceit.com.

Home cooking when done right is better then dog food in my opinion.

Home cooking is great but get a recipe that is designed by a nutritionist. You can get a generic recipe from petdiets.com. However, being a puppy the generic recipes are not recommended. I contacted Dr Remillard about Lily getting a recipe. You will need to do a consult with her which runs $250.

I am having issues with Lily eating myself so I understand what you are going through! Good luck!

I did try to address what the OP wrote though. They mentioned how it used to be convenient. A well made puppy kibble is convenient and consistent providing a balanced diet especially important while a dog is a puppy.

A lot of those who home cook don't do it everyday we make like two weeks worth and one time and freeze some.

I give my girls Wellness (mostly Core), homecooking and other stuff are mostly treats or supplemental. Ever since my mother has seen how a good nutrition has does wonders for our older jack russells (had changed their diet to match my new yorkie) she's a firm believer of quality food for them and even gave up on the "junkie" dog treats and wants only the good stuff :3

I give my yorkies Wellness Complete Health. They get nothing else in the way of treats. I will give them bites of cooked chicken and a little hard boiled eggs. JoJo tonight has been throwing up yellow bile so he is going on a chicken and rice diet tomorrow . If he continues getting sick he goes to the vet.

No pork. Many years ago i had a tiny dog pure bred. I gave him cooked pork chop. We were traveling frome fla to colorado. He started screaming in pain. I thought he got hurt. Took him to the vet. He said pork had a gland swollen up in his tummy. Said small purbreds can get that conditions from the fat in it.

Not just pure breeds really any dog can get pancreatitis.

Royal Canin Yorkshire formula seems to be the only dry dog food that my spoiled girl will eat. Period. She loves it. Of course she prefers whatever we're eating, but that isn't always an option, lol. Even our cats won't stay out of her bowl now that we switched to this brand.
