Tick Talk - need info on tick prevention for me I am taking Macy and Molly the middle of October to a dog camp at Wisconsin Dells, WI in the woods. The ticks are supposed to be really thick and I am freaking out.We don’t have ticks where I live and this is really bothering me.The dogs are on K9 Advantix II and I have a can of Deep Woods Off with DEET but other than those two things, I am at a loss on what to do to prevent ticks from getting on me or the dogs.Help, I need some ideas on what to wear, do I cut the dogs short so I can see anyticks if they get on the dogs, is K9 Advantix II enough to prevent ticks on them?HELP!!!I am starting to panic. |
I wouldn't panic too bad. Ticks are gross and they suck but... it just is what it is. Wear long pants preferably tucked into some kind of a boot. Yes personally I would advise keeping the dogs short. Ticks are sooo much easier to find. K9 advantix II should do a pretty good job (it does for us anyway). They do have other sprays too but just research first. I used 'ticked off!' one time and misted Jax with it before walking through the woods and never found any ticks. |
I agree with Brit, wear clothing that protects you. A hat is helpful too. For the dogs, I check them thoroughly from head to paw after an outing. It is challenging with long hair. |
K9 advantix II works well for us too & the ticks are BAD around here. I just wish it was available for people lol! |
Brit, I'm looking for Ticked Off online. Where did you find yours? This is a dumb question but do ticks jump like fleas or do they just crawl? The cabin we are staying at has washer and dryer, if I take my clothes off and wash them does that get rid of any ticks on my clothes? Ticks are so tiny how do you see them on a dog? Do they crawl once they get on a dog or just bite and stay where they are? Good grief! How can one little bug bother me so much!!! Quote:

Ticks do not move as fast as fleas and do not jump. They are easy to catch, although the smallest of them can be difficult to spot. Teddy had one that looked like a speck of dirt under his eye. I use tweezers to catch and remove the tick. Then I put the tick in a ziplock bag with rubbing alcohol to make sure it dies. |
This is one of things I am scared of. I have never seen a tick, how do I know if it's a speck of dirt or a tick? Can you see the legs? If I do find a tick on a dog, do I need to take them to the vet and get tested to see if they have lyme when I get back? Quote:

I had found maybe 3 ticks on Bentley on various times when he was on Frontline. I switched to K9 Advantix II and I haven't found one flea or tick on him for the past 2 years. As for yourself, the advice the others gave of putting your cuffs of your pants in a boot and maybe a spray will help. |

Ticks have to be attached for 24 - 48 hours to possibly infect the dog/person. You do not need to have your babies tested for lyme if you find a tick. Teddy has had many ticks. We have annual tick borne disease tests when we have the heartworm test done. I'm not sure if it is worth it or necessary. |
That sounds like such a great trip. Many vets are recommending the Bayer Seresto collar. I haven't tried it because of my fear of the old toxic flea collars, but it may be worth considering it under these circumstances. I've heard it is very effective. Index Seresto® | PetParents |
