Newbie here with question re: reputable breeder..apologize if I'm in the wrong place! Hello all. Just joined this great group this evening! I am not sure where to post a message regarding reputable places to find a forever friend.... I've been visiting this site for a while and finding such great info! I grew up with Yorkies in the 60's and 70's....we always had a "baby"and a large dog of some kind too, and it always amazed me how the Yorkie was consistently the one "in charge". I have two grown children and two boys, twins who are 12, and everyone is self sufficient enough at last that I can welcome another Yorkie to love and have as my companion! We have a fat cat named Tucker and an elderly Golden Retriever named Gracie. We lost Gracie's littermate and sister earlier this summer to cancer. We live in Austin TX. I am mortally terrified of doing business with an unscrupulous breeder. I have not consulted my vet yet, (just moving forward with this idea this past week or so), but I thought you guys might be able to point me in the right direction. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! |
You can check the ytca.org |
Welcome to YT!! Definitely look into YTCA.org, but also check under the breeder section here on YorkieTalk. There's countless threads of good & bad breeders from all over the country. You'll learn a lot about what and who to look out for! Glad you're doing your research and I hope you find the perfect pup for your family :) |
Welcome to Yt, sorry can't help you with breeders, I suggest follow advise of the above members. |
I too recommend the YTCA, when I first came to Yorkietalk, I had no idea on how to find a dog. Someone mentioned the Yorkshire Terrier club of America and I'm so glad that they did. It's the mother club of the Yorkie and breeders who belong must be breeding for several years and promise to abide by certain ethical standards. Of course, not every breeder who belongs is great, but you can find some great ones who belong I recommend it because they have members in nearly every state and most people can visit the home in person. This is extremely important, otherwise, you don't know how the breeding pair are being kept. While Yorkietalk also has some good breeders, anyone can join Yorkietalk and some breeders join just to sell dogs. Yorkietalk has in the past had members who were horrific breeders, so please be careful if you go that route. Some people will recommend a breeder even though there own dog is still just a pup and they have no way of knowing if it's healthy yet. Best of luck! In the library we have several guides on how to choose a breeder. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html The link in my signature takes you to a breeder referral for the YTCA. |
Try the ytca as others have mentioned and also akc. Im searching for my second baby and I see a bunch of breeders in tx. I'll pm you some info and hopefully it will help |

There are puppy mills and backyard breeders everywhere it's your job to get to know your breeder and recognize red flags just as it is with any other place you look. |

I'm with Nancy in that AKC will sell an ad to anyone who's registering a litter. YTCA was once the gold standard but has lost members and prestige in recent years because of their own infighting. It's still a good place to start a search, but be careful not to fall prey to some members whose only interest in the club is the higher price their directory listing can command for them. Proceed slowly, communicate with breeders, establish rapport, check references and reconcile their standards to your expectations. |
Guess I said one thing and opened a can of worms... wish I could delete my response for this topic. Everyone doesn't need to jump at what I said. To the OP I apologize for giving you any misleading or wrong info I'm by no means an expert just giving my OP IN I ON from what I've been told by other posters. I hope you find your pup |

Making sure the pups are registered AKC is important because the AKC does the best job of monitoring breeders and they wont register mixes so at least you do know you are getting a purebred which you cant ensure with other registries. I doesnt mean you have a good breeder though you are still going to have to research your breeder and make sure they meet the criteria of what is important in a breeder. My Breeder registered her pups AKC but she also let them go at 7 weeks. She never mentioned health testing and her health guarantee was for 72 hrs so she wasnt a good breeder at all but I wasnt an experienced yorkie buyer either because it was my place to make sure she met certain criteria. |
Also, ask for references! Reputable breeders give out references, both from previous buyers and from their vet. You can also do a Google search on the breeder. Look for "(insert breeder's name here) reviews" or "(insert kennel name here) reviews" or "(insert breeder's name here) YorkieTalk" or "(insert kennel name here) reviews". If you aren't sure about a breeder, go ahead and post a thread in the Breeders or Breeders, Vet, and Groomers Reviews section here on the forum. |

Well, I think the Ads on AKC are a fine place to start. You can see listings of purebred pups plus they highlight the breeders that are YTCA members and breeders of merit. After that, double check that they are club members (at YTCA website) and do a google search of the breeders name and the kennel name. Any bad reviews (and good ones too) will show up. It takes time and a lot of effort but it's worth it. Good luck. |
Go to Dog shows This is rarely mentioned, but for those who live close to large cities, it is a very viable option. Step 1 www.akc.org Go to Events and Search by State and you will see all the dog shows coming up in your area for 12 months. Step 2 Go to www.infodog.com something called a Judging Schedule is posted ~2wks before the show date. There you will find out how many Yorkies are entered, and you can see the dogs in the ring. *Note www.ytca.org wil showcase what they Call Roving Specialities, and this will be where you get to see the largest number of Yorkies in a show. Now they may not occur in a city close to you, but it is worth checking out. Also Austin is a large enough city, that often times cities have something called All about Pet shows. Or Pet Exhibition, Many times the clubs will rent a booth to educate the public about their breed, and may have some Yorkies attending. |
