This is just so heartbreaking to hear of all these stories of dogs being carried off by wild animals . It grieves my heart so much. Isn't there enough wild prey for them to catch that they have to come into people's home environments to get their food? |
If you have predatory birds in your backyard, the doggies can wear bright colored clothing w/reflective tape on them. We had a very good discussion about this & it will deter the hawks & owls, confuse them. Let me see if I can find the thread... Quote:

Thank you for taking the time to answer my post. I can understand their need to survive the best way they can and as you said we are in their territory. It is just sad that it must be this way and I am glad it is being talked about so that there can be things we can do to be more vigilant to protect the little ones. |
Here it is, Yorkiemom1 goes into more detail in another thread, will try to find that too. Post #4: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...afe-hawks.html Quote:

Found it, here it is, post #8: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...8196-hawk.html Yorkiemom1: "I even called the Houston Zoo and spoke with one of the bird experts there...I wanted to know if hawks and owls saw color....she said yes, and she told me those little dogs look like rabbits....so I put neon orange vests on them when they are outside...." |
I know a guys who had a friend in high school who's chihuahua was snatched by an owl while standing next to the guy while waiting for the school bus! They never found that pup. :( |
I was wondering about a way to keep the little ones safe besides wearing the vests and all. I read it on an old thread that someone did this for their dogs safety. What about putting in a chain link kennel run for them? Would that be of any use? They would be safe inside it and the birds of prey could not reach them. It would be even better with the vests and all the reflective stuff on their protective garments wouldn\'t it? Just a suggestion I hope might be of some use for someone. I would still want to stay outside with them but if that worked then they could play outside and pottie safely, yes? |
