Yorkie + Cat Violently Fighting :(
 

Hey everyone,

I've had the day from hell, and come home tonight, and my dog and cat cannot even be in the same room together without trying to kill each other.

My cat is a year and a half, and has spent every day of his life with my yorkie. I can't say that they're friends by any means. My cat can be a total jerk to my little dog, but it's like…something snapped tonight.

My dog goes after the cat VICIOUSLY every time he sees him. My cat of course is in hysterics, hissing, and on constant alert now. The two of them keep going under my bed and it sounds like they're killing each other.

I'm at a loss !!!!

My Yorkie has NEVER EVER EVER behaved this way. He's normally very passive and kind of a wuss. He'll growl at my cat, and hide behind my legs usually…and now he's just going for blood.

HELP!? I have no idea what's going on here!!

Side Note: now the cat won't let me near him, he's hissing and growling at me when I'm even in the same room as him. I wish these two could speak english!

Hi Kristy....I have a question...is your cat declawed or not? I have a cat also who is 5 years old. She came into the household as a baby and with 2 dachshunds in the house. I had to separate them with a baby gate because one. Of my boys wasn't having it. However, as the cat grew she the learned to jump the gate. Hershey the youngest dachshund tried went after her and bite her ( he didn't draw blood or anything) but I believe Roxy (cat) remember it. As she continued to grow she started. Swatting at just Hershey and not Fritz. Fritz was great with any dog or cat. I then was really worried about her nails clawing Hershey (particularly his eye) so I purchase Softpaws for cats for her nails. They are gel nail covers. When my boys passed Roxy was alone for 3 years until we got Remy in March of this year. Roxy sure wasn't happy. She hissed at him, chased him down, etc. Remy wasn't innocent either, he was just doing the puppy thing and running after her too. I started using the softpaws again because I was afraid she would get him in the eye. I had them separated by a baby gate for awhile until they got used to each other. Now they are great with each other. Even though Remy is still jumping in her face, chasing her, kissing her she is so tolerable now with him.

Has anything changed in the household? How old is your yorkie? Is either one of them sick? For right now if I were you I would keep them separated when you leave and no one is home to watch them.

Also, with the cat hissing and growling at you sounds like he is scared. Is the yorkie in the room with you when he does that?

Hunter (cat) is not declawed. I'm certainly worried about clawing of the eye, so I will definitely keep them apart. I've gotten Hunter to calm down, he's being very loving and head butting me and meowing again… He must've been scared.

Now that I'm trying to process this situation a bit more, it's definitely my Yorkie that is causing this. I'm wondering if he possibly doesn't feel well. Maybe this is a vet visit that's needed. He's being normal otherwise. Just … suddenly out of nowhere has a hit out on the cat. :(

I have the doggie locked in my bedroom/ on my bed with me. Keeping a close eye on him, and the cat away from him until tomorrow. I will also separate them while I'm away at work.

Oh good I'm happy to hear your cat is back to normal with you. It won't hurt to take your yorkie to the vet to make sure he/ she is ok. Especially since this just started happening. Also, if you want you can check out softpaws.com to look into getting those gel nail covers. I just sit Roxy on my lap and clip her nails and then put the glue in the gel nails and slip it over her nails. She is awesome with letting me do it. I do have to check her nails often because the nail caps will eventually fall off as her nails grow out. There are times I find the nail caps on the floor and I know then she has some missing. I do like them because at least I know Remy will be safe if she thinks about swatting him. She actually lays on her back and plays with him now. She's a big cat (15 lbs) compared to him lol. I hope yours will go back to being good with each other.

Well, the issues continue. Strangely enough, my Yorkie hasn't been the issue since that night. Now my cat just hisses at the pup whenever he is near. I wonder if its' possible that my dog just scared him so bad a few days ago? will they ever go back to normal? :(

My apartment is 450 sq feet,so this is making things VERY uncomfortable.
I've been trying to separate them when I'm at work but my cat knows how to open my bedroom door.

So the fights happen mostly in the bedroom? Does Hunter have a safe space- escape route if he wanted to get away from the dog?

A friend of mine had the same problem but it was remedied by putting up floating shelving staggered like steps in areas where her dog was able to trap her cat which was the hallway and bedroom.
