Poor Rigby has tummy troubles Hi Everyone! I'm new to the board, having just got a 5-month-old Yorkie pup from a breeder in Guadalajara .... Yes, that's Mexico. The little fella, Rigby, made a long, 6-hour trip two days ago to his new home near Puerto Vallarta. Unfortunately, he was full of fleas, so I bathed him in anti-flea shampoo this morning, and he seemed quite happy after that until about dinner time, when he started to throw up watery vomit and had three bouts of diarrhea before bed. He has eaten nothing other than what the breeder recommended and a teaspoon of plain yogurt he begged to share. Should I be worried? Or is this just a reaction to all the uncertainty and excitement of leaving his first home? |
Yes, I'd get him to a vet IMMEDIATELY. This could be SO many things, some of them life threatening. Most concerning of all would be parvo, which can be deadly in puppies. Parvo that is progressing would come w/ watery diarrhea and vomiting. Truly, you NEED to get to a vet ASAP. |
Thank you so much for your reply, Wylie's Mom. After I posted the message above, Rigby had no further problems. This morning, his feces was well formed and he had no vomiting since. He spent a quiet and uneventful night, and appeared to have "got rid" of anything that was bothering his tummy. But I'm not taking any chances. Today, I had an appointment booked with the vet for a general check-up, and I will keep it. I will tell the vet all that I told you, so Rigby has a thorough examination. I am thankful that I stumbled upon this site. Although I showed dogs for 18 years (Springer Spaniels and Cavaliers), I realize that I know very little about Yorkies. What a wonderful place to learn! Your efforts are very much appreciated! :aimeeyork |
i hope Rigby does well at the vet today!! |

Cat and Chickensmith, thank you for your kind words! The appointment went very well indeed. Rigby had a heckuva dose of fleas and one or two ticks (!) but the vet said, otherwise, he's in fine shape. He's the right size and weight for his age, his eyes are fine; his teeth are almost finished the teething stage and the new ones are coming in strong; and his body is nice and compact as it should be. He took a tiny sample of feces from Rigby's rectum and will have it tested, just to be sure there's nothing more sinister than "too much excitement" which caused the tummy troubles yesterday. He got a gold star! :star: |
