Lexi ALWAYS wants to play with new puppy Parker, my now 10 week old Shih Tzu has been with us for a week now. Lexi was super excited to have someone to play with and they have been playing together since day one. The problem is Lexi wants to play ALL the time. Parker will be playing nicely with a toy and Lexi will jump in him, go to get water, jump on him. He has even started to go to the door to go potty today, but as soon as he starts running to the door, there is Lexi running behind jumping on him before he gets a chance to get to the door. Granted, Psrker will sometimes s start the playing, but it is almost always Lexi. I think Parker is getting annoyed and me too. Do you think this is something that will get better over time? Just don't know what to do about this? |
On one hand, it sounds so sweet/cute that Lexi wants to be part of whatever Parker is up to...but on the other hand, I can totally see why you're getting a little annoyed. I'm not a great trainer, so the only thing I can suggest is giving it time, and also trying to interrupt the behavior. My guess is that Lexi's over-exuberance will calm down over time... |
He has a new playmate and as it has been said he is just so overjoyed and can't contain himself. The newness should wind down and I am not sure exactly what but it seems you do need to intervene as best you can to keep Lexi more downkeyed. That is the problem as I can't say how or what you should be doing. I hope it will get better for Parker and your sake. |

Thank you. It has still only been a week, so I'm hoping Lexi will calm down soon. The funny thing is when it was just Lexi she was kinda lazy and slept a lot, except around 7pm she would run around and play like crazy for a couple hours. I always thought she was bored, and now with the puppy, she never wants to nap. I do intervene and pull Lexi off of Parker every once in a while. If Parker walks away to play something else I know he has had enough playing, but if he tries to jump up and get to Lexi I know he still wants to play. |
I know your Lexi was bored being by herself from the sounds of it. My Joey gets bored and doesn't play much himself. I can't get another pet though unfortunately. About the only fun he has is looking out the full glass storm door and watching people go by. Bad thing about it is that he barks and barks. I feel bad for him. If it has only been a week you said then it is still new to Lexi to have a friend. I am sure things will calm down. Maybe Lexi will tell him herself that Parker needs to calm down. Ha Ha. Then he might learn. But I hope they keep on being good friends. |
I don't have any advice but I do feel where you're coming from because Teddy will not leave my cat alone for a minute. I thought it was something he'd grow out of with training and time, etc but he is manic and gets himself beat up by the cat due to his overenthusiasm! I have read that some hyper Yorkies just naturally outgrow the state (my previous Yorkie were so docile!) so maybe time will tell? |
